Some spam messages can contain offensive images or invisible images that tell the sender that you've opened that email (and thus verify that your email address is active). To avoid this, you can prevent images from loading until you know they're from someone you trust.
To block images in incoming emails:
Click "Options" in the upper-right corner of the page, then choose "Mail Options" from the pull-down menu.

On the page that opens, click "Spam" in the left navigation pane.

On the Spam page, select one of the options for incoming images:
Always, except in Spam folder: When you open a message in your Spam folder, none of the images that the message contains are downloaded. Images in all other messages are automatically downloaded when you open the messages.
Only from my contacts and Certified senders: When you open a message from someone on your contacts list or from a certified sender, the images are downloaded.
Initially block all images: When you open a message, none of the images that it contains are downloaded. This is the default setting.

Click the "Save Changes" button to save your settings.
