Microsoft Outlook 98, 2000, and 2002

Tip: If you use Outlook, and have a Business Email address associated with a Yahoo! ID, we can automatically configure your POP settings for you. Learn more.

Outlook allows you to add a new email account to your existing profile. This means you do not have to replace your current settings in order to send and receive Yahoo! Business Email messages.

Note: Unfortunately, Microsoft Outlook 97 does not support authenticated SMTP, and thus Microsoft Outlook 97 cannot be used to retrieve Yahoo! Business Email messages.

To add a new email account to your existing profile:

  1. From the Tools menu, select "Accounts." (If you do not see "Accounts," place your cursor over the two arrows at the bottom of the list to display more choices.)
  2. Click the "Add" button.
  3. From the Add menu, click "Mail."
  4. In the Display Name box, type your name as you would like it to appear when you send a message, and then click "Next."
  5. In the Email Address box, enter your full Yahoo! Business email address (for example, "you@widgetdesigns.com"), and then click "Next."
  6. In the box labeled "My incoming mail server is a..." select "POP3" server.
  7. Type "pop.bizmail.yahoo.com" in the Incoming Mail (POP3 or IMAP) Server box.
  8. Type "smtp.bizmail.yahoo.com" in the Outgoing Mail (SMTP) Server box.
  9. Click "Next."
  10. In the Account Name box, enter your full Yahoo! Business email address (e.g., "you@widgetdesigns.com").
  11. In the Password box, enter your Yahoo! Business Email password.
  12. Check "Remember Password" if you don't want Outlook to prompt you for your password each time you check your mail. Handy!
  13. Do not check "Log On Using Secure Password Authentication (SPA)."
  14. Click "Next."
  15. Type a name for your new Internet email account (for example, Yahoo! Business Email).
  16. Choose the appropriate connection type under the "Which Method Do You Use to Connect to the Internet" heading.
  17. If you chose "Connect using my phone line," you will need to select a dial-up connection in the Dial-up Connection Wizard and click "Next."
  18. Click "Finish."
  19. Select "pop.mail.yahoo.com" under "Account," and click "Properties."
  20. Click the "Advanced" tab.
  21. Under "Incoming Server (POP3)," check the box next to "This server requires an encrypted connection (SSL)." The port number in the "Incoming Server (POP3)" field should automatically change from 110 to 995. If it doesn't, make sure to change the port number to 995.
  22. Under "Outgoing Server (SMTP)," check the box next to "This server requires an encrypted connection (SSL)." Enter port number "465" in the "Outgoing Server (SMTP)" field.

The Yahoo! Business Email SMTP server requires authentication. To turn this setting on:

  1. From the Tools menu, choose "Accounts."
  2. Select your Yahoo! Business Email account and click "Properties."
  3. Select the "Servers" tab.
  4. Check the box next to "My Server Requires Authentication."
  5. Click "OK."

To control deletion of messages from the Yahoo! Mail server:

  1. From the Tools menu, select "Accounts."
  2. Click on the "Mail" tab.
  3. Select your Yahoo! Business Email account and click "Properties."
  4. Click on the "Advanced" tab.
  5. Check "Leave a copy of messages on server" if you want to save your Yahoo! Business Email messages on the Yahoo! Mail server as well as on your local computer. Do not check this box if you want your messages to be deleted from the Yahoo! Mail server once you have received them in Outlook Express.
  6. Click "OK."
  7. Close Microsoft Outlook and restart.

We strongly recommend that you enable SSL for both POP and SMTP, as detailed in the above instructions. This will ensure that your Yahoo! ID, password, and email messages are transmitted securely between your mail client and the Yahoo! servers. However, if you choose to not use SSL for SMTP, your email client will likely default the SMTP port to 25. If your ISP blocks port 25, or if you're unable to send email, then you will need to use port 587 when sending via Yahoo!'s SMTP server. To make this change, please follow the directions below:

  1. From the "Tools" menu, select "Accounts."
  2. Select your Yahoo! Business Email POP account and click the "Properties" button.
  3. Click on the "Advanced" tab.
  4. Next to "Outgoing server (SMTP)," change port 25 to 587.
  5. Click "Apply," then click "OK" and "Close."
