How do I use Advanced Video Search?

You can use Advanced Video Search to find videos of a certain file type, size, duration, and more. The options you choose apply only to your current search.

Select as many of the following options as you like. Keep in mind the more restrictions you set on your search, the fewer results are returned.

  • Search for: For more precise and useful results, use this text input box to add additional instructions about your search terms. You can use these symbols to help target your search:

+ A plus "+" sign in front of a word indicates results should include this word.
    - A minus "-" sign in front of a word indicates results should not include this word.
"   " A phrase inside quotation marks indicates the search should include the terms as a phrase, not individual terms.

Example: You want to see videos of Sponge Bob without Squidward. Type +"Sponge Bob" -Squidward; in the "Search for" box.

  • Format: Limit your results to specific video formats such as AVI, MPEG, QuickTime, Windows Media, Flash, and Real.

  • Size: Search specifically for small, medium, and large videos. Size refers to the resolution of the encoded video file.

  • Duration: Limit your results to videos that are shorter than one minute or longer than one minute.

  • Site/Domain: Restrict your search to sites with a specific domain suffix such as .com, .edu, .org, or .gov.

Example: To search for video from the web sites of educational institutions, click the radio button: Only .edu domains

To specify more than one domain, or one not listed in the menu, click the radio button for "only search in this domain/site:" and type the domain(s) into the text field. Use commas to separate multiple domains.
You can also use this field to search within a particular web site such as yahoo.com.

  • SafeSearch Filter: You can choose to have recognized explicit, adult-oriented videos filtered out of your results. We use information from our technology partners to block a large amount of explicit material. Please keep in mind that Yahoo! cannot guarantee that all explicit, adult-oriented content will be recognized and filtered out.

The Safe Search status link in the upper right corner of Video Search indicates that SafeSearch is ON or OFF.

To change the SafeSearch filter setting:

    • From the video results page, click the Safe Search status link. The Search Preferences Edit page opens. If SafeSearch filter has not been set to a preferred setting, the default setting filters out recognized adult video and image search results.

    • To temporarily adjust the SafeSearch setting for a specific search, use the "On/Off" option on the uk.search.yahoo.com Advanced Search page. This overrides your Search Preferences filter setting for that search only. It does not permanently change the SafeSearch setting. The setting on your Search Preferences page applies to searches after that one search.

      • Go to uk.search.yahoo.com

      • Click the Advanced Search link to the right of the search box. Select "On" or "Off" to override your Search Preferences SafeSearch setting for that one search only.
