Preferences are saved settings that apply every time you use Yahoo! to search the Web. Just click the Options link to the right of the search box on the Yahoo! Search start page. You can also click the Preferences link in the dropdown to view and change your search settings. You can save changes to your computer or you can sign in to save your search preferences to your Yahoo! ID.

You can select the following Yahoo! Search preferences:

  • Search Assist: To turn on or off the Yahoo! Search Assist suggestions which appear beneath the search box when you are typing in search terms. There are four settings ranging from Never to Always.
  • Search Pad: To turn on or off the Yahoo! tool that automatically takes notes as you search the web.
  • Enhanced Results: This preference setting allows you to customize your search results with enhanced results. The enhanced results display uses SearchMonkey to power a richer experience for your search results. It adds new features to your Yahoo! Search results page. You can add and delete various enhanced search modules from the Yahoo! Gallery. You can also participate in the SearchMonkey program if you want to enhance your search experiences. Click here to see more information on Enhanced Results and the SearchMonkey program.
  • SafeSearch: SafeSearch can be set to filter recognized explicit, adult-oriented content and images out of your search results. SafeSearch can be set to one of three modes and can be password protected. Please keep in mind that no filter is perfect, and Yahoo! cannot guarantee that all explicit content will be recognized and filtered out of results.
  • SearchScan: Similar to SafeSearch but protects your computer from viruses and attack. This service is provided by McAfee and alerts you to websites that may be potentially harmful.
  • Languages: Our search includes websites from all over the world, so your results might include sites written in English, Japanese, Spanish, or other languages. If you'd like to limit your search to certain languages, you can select them here. Choose as many as you'd like.
  • Display&Layout Settings:
  1. Open results in a new window: Use this setting to have each search result you select open in a new browser window. This lets you keep your Yahoo! Search results page in view. The default setting is No.
  2. Results per page: Yahoo! Search displays 10 Web Results per page. You can choose to see between 10 and 100.
  3. Show More from this site link for web results. The default setting is No.

After selecting your preferences, Finished. You will then return to your search results and see a confirmation message.

Your preferences apply every time you log in and use Yahoo! Search, unless you use Advanced Search to choose different options for each individual search.

Note: If you are signed in to your Yahoo! account, your preferences are saved to your account, and will be accessible from any computer. However, if you are not signed-in to your Yahoo! account, your preferences are only saved on the computer you are currently using.
