I already have a Yahoo! Phone Card, but the system is asking me to sign up for one.

To fix this problem, you'll need to uninstall Yahoo! Messenger, then reinstall it. Doing this will not cause you to lose your Friend List or your Phone Card information because that data is stored on our servers, not your machine.

Begin by uninstalling Yahoo! Messenger:

  1. Important: Make sure to exit Yahoo! Messenger completely. If you don't, the uninstallation will fail. To do so:
    • Go the "Login" tab at the top of your Yahoo! Messenger client and select "Sign Out of Yahoo! and Close."
    • Also, you will see the Yahoo! Messenger icon (the red Y! with the offline face on it) in the lower-right corner of your screen (also called the system tray). You must right-click this icon with your mouse and select "Exit." Yahoo! Messenger is then closed completely.
  2. Click the "Start" button on the taskbar.
  3. Select "Programs," then "Yahoo! Messenger."
  4. Click "Uninstall Yahoo! Messenger."
  5. Choose "Automatic," then click the "Next" button.
  6. Click the "Finish" button.

When Yahoo! Messenger is uninstalled, the next step is to install it again:

  1. Go to the Yahoo! Messenger home page.
  2. Click the "Windows" link in the upper-left corner.
  3. This takes you to the download page. When that is loaded, click the "Start Download" button.

Close all programs that you currently have running and click the "Windows" link on the left side of the page.

If you use Internet Explorer:

  1. When the download starts, you see a dialog box with two options, "Run" or "Save."
  2. Choose "Save this program to disk" and press "OK."
  3. Save the file to your desktop by clicking the pull-down menu (down arrow) and selecting "Desktop," if that option is not already chosen.
  4. Click "Save" to begin downloading the installation file.
  5. When the download of the installation file is complete, a file named "ymsgrie.exe" appears on your desktop.

If you use Netscape:

  1. When the download starts, you see a dialog box with two options, "Save" or "Cancel."
  2. Choose "Save this program to disk" and press "OK."
  3. Save the file to your desktop by clicking the pull-down menu (down arrow) and selecting "Desktop," if that option is not already chosen.
  4. Click "Save" to begin downloading the installation file.
  5. When the download of the installation file is complete, a file named "ymsgr.exe" appears on your desktop.

Note: Download time can be anywhere from one to six minutes, depending on the speed you are connecting to the Internet.

When the download is complete, exit your browser and all other programs. Locate the appropriate downloaded file on your desktop and double-click it. This launches the installation process and allow you to use Yahoo! Messenger. During the installation process, you are asked to enter your Yahoo! ID and password. Please enter your Yahoo! ID in all lowercase letters.

Follow the usual steps again to make a PC-to-Phone call, and your account should be fully functional.

We apologize again for the inconvenience.
