Transfer Music to a Portable Device
Verify Your Device Compatibility with the Yahoo! Music Jukebox
First verify that your device and transferable files are compatible. To transfer Yahoo! Music Unlimited subscription music, you must have the Yahoo! Music Unlimited To Go tier, and a subscription-compatible player. To transfer non-subscription music, follow the instructions below. Burnable tracks you buy from Yahoo! Music Unlimited can only be transferred to Windows Media-compatible portable players, but MP3s and most other ripped files should transfer to most devices.
Transfer Music
- Attach the compatible device to your computer.
- You should see the device name appear in the Yahoo! Music Jukebox left navigation pane.
- Click Playlists in the left navigation pane to open your stored playlists.
- Simply drag the playlist(s) you want to transfer down to the device name in the left navigation pane.
- You can also transfer music directly from My Music: Click My Music in the left pane, then drag and drop tracks from My Music to the portable device name in the left pane (you can also drag artists and albums from My Music.)
- From Now Playing: You can create an instant playlist to transfer by simply dragging music (tracks, albums, artists, genres) from My Music to Now Playing on the right side of the window. Once you have the list compiled, click the Actions button, then Transfer to Portable. Select the device to transfer to if you have multiple devices attached.
-
Help Me Build a Playlist For This Device: This tool helps you automatically fill your device with the specific music you want without having to create individual playlists. Just select the criteria for music you want transferred to the device from My Music collection (artist, album, genre), and the Yahoo! Music Jukebox will fill your device with the specified music up to the device's capacity.
- In some cases, you may encounter a message telling you not all the tracks can be transferred. This is especially true if you are trying to transfer Yahoo! Music Unlimited subscription music. You will see a message if the tracks cannot be transferred for some reason.
- The Yahoo! Music Jukebox will also check to be sure there is sufficient storage space on the device to copy the selected songs. If not, you will have to reduce the number of songs you are transferring.
If you encounter problems transferring music to a device, check out Problems Transferring Songs to Portable Devices.
Other Portable Device Tools
-
Refresh Device: Click the Refresh button at the top of the device window to re-display the contents of the device. Sometimes the window is cleared when you plug in a USB device; clicking this button shows you the updated contents of the device.
-
Synchronize Device: You can synchronize music automatically using the Synchronize button. Select either an entire playlist or a collection to automatically upload. (Note that some players/devices do not recognize playlists. In that case, the full collection of songs you upload will be transferred, but the order of the songs may be different than that of your original playlist.)
-
Erase Device: If your device supports the feature, you will see an Erase button at the top of the device window. This allows you to manage your device music by deleting it from the Yahoo! Music Jukebox window.
-
Manage Playlists from Yahoo! Music Jukebox: If your device allows, you may see the playlists on the device in the left pane of the Yahoo! Music Jukebox. If so, you may remove and rename playlists from the Yahoo! Music Jukebox left pane. If you remove or rename a playlist in the Yahoo! Music Jukebox left pane, those changes will be effective on your device. You can also open a playlist and remove a track. Note that while the track will be removed from the playlist view, it will remain on the device.
-
Synchronization Preferences: You can select how the Yahoo! Music Jukebox synchronizes your music in the Preferences section. From the Edit pulldown menu, select Preferences > Portable Devices. Under Portable Device Settings, When I Connect This Device, click Automatically synchronize tracks if you want the Yahoo! Music Jukebox to perform this operation each time you connect the specified device.
- Note that you will have to set specific Preferences for each device you use, if you have more than one. The device must be connected to set the Preference, it cannot be done without the device attached.
Verify Your Portable Device is Compatible with Yahoo! Music Jukebox and Yahoo! Music Unlimited
The Yahoo! Music Jukebox will transfer your imported music (music you imported from CDs and burnable downloads, not Yahoo! Music Unlimited subscription music) to most Windows Media-compatible portable players and iPod. At present the device manager in Windows 2000 does not support the Yahoo! Music Jukebox, so you will not be able to transfer music if you use Windows 2000.
Yahoo! Music Unlimited subscription music can only be transferred to
subscription-compatible devices. To ensure your portable device is compatible with Yahoo! Music Unlimited and the Yahoo! Music Jukebox, see the full list of devices on the Yahoo! Music Jukebox and Yahoo! Music Unlimited Compatible Portable Devices page.
Music imported using the Yahoo! Music Jukebox is compatible with iPod, as long as the music is encoded in either MP3 or AAC formats. Yahoo! Music Unlimited subscription music is not transferable to iPod. To find out more about using iPod with the Yahoo! Music Jukebox, see
Yahoo! Music Jukebox and iPod.
Problems/Errors Transferring Music
For music you import to the Yahoo! Music Jukebox aside from Yahoo! Music Unlimited To Go tracks, there should be no issue (other than file incompatibilities, etc. For more on this, see the
Yahoo! Music Jukebox and Yahoo! Music Unlimited Compatible Portable Devices page.)
For Yahoo! Music Unlimited tracks: You must have the "To Go" feature of Yahoo! Music Unlimited. If your subscription has lapsed, tracks will not be transferred. As long as you maintain your Y! Unlimited To Go subscription, Y! Unlimited tracks can be transferred to a player, and those already on the player will continue to run. If your subscription lapses, tracks cannot be transferred and those on the player become inoperative until your subscription is reinstated. This does not affect purchased, burnable downloads, or music you imported outside the Y! Unlimited subscription service.
If you see an error indicating your tracks may not be licensed for transfer:
Your subscription track licenses are renewed automatically, but in some cases, you may need to manually renew them. This might occur if you have not logged on for several weeks. If you have an up-to-date subscription to Yahoo! Music Unlimited To Go, and you see an error message when trying to transfer subscription tracks to a device, or your tracks on the device will not play, try the following:
- Sign in to Yahoo! Music Unlimited. Be sure you're online.
- Play or download a track from Yahoo! Music Unlimited while online.
- Reconnect your portable player. When the name shows up in the left pane, your player should now be updated.
