Preference Settings for the Yahoo! Music Jukebox

Preference settings determine how the technical aspects of the Yahoo! Music Jukebox work for you. This differs from your music listening Preferences, which are accessed through My Music Profile.

Preference settings allow you to manage the following services:
  • General
  • My Music
  • CD
  • Plugin Settings
  • Mini Mode & Skins
  • Yahoo! Music Unlimited (Y! Unlimited)
  • Portable Devices
  • Messenger Music
  • Network Music

Open Preferences

From the Yahoo! Music Jukebox Edit menu, select Preferences .... After you make changes, always click Apply and then OK to close the dialog.

General:
  1. When I Start Up My Computer gives you options for how to access the Yahoo! Music Jukebox when your computer starts and during operation.
  2. Play Settings gives you options for how clicking in the Yahoo! Music Jukebox works for your convenience. Double-clicking gives you two options: Play all items in view means that if you are viewing a grid or other display of track names, doube-clicking will cause all those tracks to play (you don't have to play each one separately). Plays only the double-clicked item disables the play-all feature, such that only the single track you double-click will play. Play/double-clicking gives you options for how tracks are added to Now Playing for playlist building. Adds to Now Playing and plays immediately adds the track to Now Playing and plays the track. Adds to Now Playing and plays in order is used to add the track to Now Playing and compile a playlist but not necessarily play that track now. Clears Now Playing and plays immediately is used to play the song but not add it to Now Playing.
  3. Shuffle: Allows you to choose your preference for how music is played when you use the Shuffle control in the main player window.
  4. Audio Settings. Bandwidth: On installation, the Yahoo! Music Jukebox detects and sets your connection speed. Change it here if it's in error, or if you change your connection type.
  5. Normalize volume: Volume leveling automatically increases or decreases the average volume of a song so that all files play at approximately the same volume. Uncheck the box to turn this off.
  6. Crossfade: During playback, audio cross-fade gradually overlaps the end of the current song with the beginning of the next song, for a smooth audio transition. Adjust the timing, or uncheck to turn it off.

My Music:
  1. My Music Directories: This preference allows you to choose which folders or music directories you want the Yahoo! Music Jukebox to search when looking for new music recently added to your PC. Click Add to locate and add directories. Click the checkbox next to existing directories to remove them from this list. (It will not delete the directory; just prevent the Yahoo! Music Jukebox from accessing it.)
  2. Monitoring Options: Indicates how often the Yahoo! Music Jukebox should scan your hard drive for new songs. Click to Scan Now to scan immediately.
  3. File Associations: This box indicates file types for which you want the Yahoo! Music Jukebox to be the default player. By default, all the file types that Yahoo! Music Jukebox plays are highlighted. To individually select a file type, first click Select None then click a file type to add. Shift-click to select more than one file type.
  4. Restore file associations at Yahoo! Music Jukebox startup: This disables other players that try to over-write your preferences here.

CD:
  1. When I Insert a CD lets you choose the default behavior when you insert a CD to import or play.
  2. Import Options refers to how tracks are imported from CDs. Current Settings and Format indicate the encoding for music you import. MP3 is the default. In some cases, you may need to encode music in a different format for transfer to portable devices (e.g., AAC). Check your portable player requirements and adjust this Preference as needed.
  3. Mode:
    • Constant Bit Rate: Uses the least amount of hard drive space. Depending on the song, the audio quality may not be the same throughout the track if certain sections are more complex and harder to compress.
    • Average Bit Rate: Default setting for automatic best music performance.
    • Variable Bit Rate: Tracks will be copied using a variety of bit rates to compress the song. The Yahoo! Music Jukebox uses more compression for sections that are easy to compress and less for sections that are harder. The end result is a track that has a more consistent audio quality throughout.
  4. Quality refers to the amount of compression you want. To use less disk space, the Yahoo! Music Jukebox can compress CD tracks when you copy them to your computer; however, some audio quality is lost. We suggest you leave the default settings for maximum performance.
  5. Import Tracks to the following location indicates the folders and directories where music you import is placed. Change as needed.
  6. Enter the file naming style lets you change how your music data are displayed.

Plugin Settings:

Plugin settings allow you to manage the specific tools your Yahoo! Music Jukebox uses for various functions. Plugins are managed automatically and should only be adjusted in an advanced user mode.

Mini-Mode and Skins:
  1. Main Skin: Allows you to choose the display skin for the Yahoo! Music Jukebox. Several default options are offered, and if you have downloaded other versions, they should display here.
  2. Mini-Mode: Allows you to customize how the mini version of the player appears when you activate this option.

Once you change any settings, click Apply then OK to confirm the change of setting and close the Preference item.

Yahoo! Music Unlimited (Y! Unlimited):
  1. When I Add a Selection to My Music: This important Preference indicates whether you want your Y! Unlimited subscription music downloaded as a file to your computer or simply added as a bookmark. By default (and we recommend) it's set to download; this way you can enjoy the music when offline. Click Bookmark It to change the default setting. From now on, subscription music will be saved as a bookmark and can only be streamed when online. You can always return to this preference and change it back to the default.
  2. File Options: Shows you the path to the folders in which music files from Yahoo! Music Unlimited are stored. To change the file, click Browse, and select the file you want to use instead.
  3. Yahoo! Music Unlimited Deactivation: Use this button to deactivate a machine if you wish to add another to your Y! Unlimited subscription. Only three machines can be active on any one account at a time for download of subscription music.

Portable Devices:

Note: You will not see specific device information unless you attach a portable device.
  1. Connected Device or Select Device indicates the name of the attached device(s). If your device does not appear in the list, try reconnecting.
  2. When I Connect This Device: gives you the option to automatically synchronize your collection.
  3. Synchronization Settings:
    • The Synchronize all of My Music and Synchronize the selected playlists options allow you to choose which music is synchronized when you attach a device. Select the first option if you wish the Yahoo! Music Jukebox to synchronize all your music upon connection, or click the second button and indicate which playlists to synchronize using the checkboxes when multiple playlists appear.

Messenger Music:

Messenger Music preferences allow you to control how you share music using Yahoo! Messenger within the Yahoo! Music Jukebox.

When I Use the Yahoo! Music Jukebox:
  • Automatically start Yahoo! Messenger: Click this box to be sure Messenger starts each time along with Yahoo! Music Jukebox.
  • Allow my friends to: These choices allow you to select how much access your Messenger friends have to your music collection.
  • When I am listening to a track, change my Yahoo! Messenger status to the name of the artist and track: Shows your music as status rather than a standard Messenger status message.

Network Music:

Network Music preferences allow you to choose how to stream music to your home sound system (WIFI) and with others on a local area network (LAN).
  1. When I Use the Yahoo! Music Jukebox:
    • Turn on Network Music: switches the feature on or off
    • Allow people on my local network to: establishes how much sharing you will allow.
    • Display my computer name as: This allows you to change the display name of your computer so others may easily recognize it.
  2. Sharing Options:
    • Share my entire music collection: allows others to view and listen to your playlists and all other music in your collection.
    • Share these playlists: allows you to select which playlists you want to stream or share. Public means those you have designated as shared or public individually on each playlist page. Note that when you designate a playlist "public" on a playlist page, it means it can be found and enjoyed by other users in the Yahoo! Music community when they search for music. The preference here simply allows you to select those playlists you have already marked as public as ones you will also share with a local area network.
