Using Messenger Music

Messenger Music is a powerful and unique feature of the Yahoo! Music Jukebox. It allows you to communicate with other Yahoo! members instantly, but also to view and hear their music and allow them to view and listen to yours. Note that Messenger Music does not enable or permit users to copy or transfer music files to other members, but it does allow users to listen to their friends' music through streaming.

Start Using Messenger Music

Click Messenger Music in the left navigation pane to begin. If you are logged in and Yahoo! Messenger is running with the Yahoo! Music Jukebox, you will see your Yahoo! Messenger friends in the left navigation pane and a fuller view in the center pane. If Yahoo! Messenger is not running, or another issue prevents you from seeing your friends here, a message will alert you to the situation.

If you can see your friends using Yahoo! Messenger in this view, you can begin right away.

1. Play your friends' music:
  1. In the main Messenger Music view, click Play next to your friend's Yahoo! ID to hear the song they're listening to right now.
  2. Click the View Music button next to your friend's ID and the window will change to allow you to browse and listen to that friend's entire music collection.
  3. Double-click any of their songs, or right-click and highlight Play.
  4. If you have allowed your friends to view and share your music collection, they can freely browse and listen to it as well.
  5. To return to the main Messenger Music window from your friend's music collection, click Messenger Music in the left navigation pane.

2. Invite a friend to listen your songs:
  1. Click My Music in the left navigation pane.
  2. Select one of your songs.
  3. Right-click and select Send song by IM.
  4. Select the Yahoo! ID of the friend you want to share the song with, or enter another Yahoo! ID.
  5. Your friend will receive an IM inviting them to listen to the song, which they can accept or deny.
  6. To return to the main Messenger Music view, click Messenger Music in the left navigation pane.

To hear full songs, you (or your friend, if they want to hear the full song) must be a Yahoo! Music Unlimited subscriber. If one or both are not, you may only share :30 samples.

Note that in Preferences you can specify who can view your collection and who cannot (see Control who sees your music, below.) If a friend has selected to make their collection not viewable or playable, you will not be able to access it.

Connect with Friends

Send an IM: From the main Messenger Music view, click the Send IM button next to your friend's Yahoo ID, or, in the left navigation pane, double-click or right-click their Yahoo! ID.

How To Add Friends to Messenger Music

In order to share and communicate using Messenger Music, your friends must have Yahoo! Messenger and the Yahoo! Music Jukebox. To add friends:
  1. Be sure they have Yahoo! Messenger. If not, you can click Contacts > Invite People to Join from Yahoo! Messenger to invite your friend.
  2. Once they have Yahoo! Messenger, they will show up in your friends list. Then click the Invite ... button next to their Yahoo! ID in the Messenger Music main view to invite them to get (or run) the Yahoo! Music Engine.
  3. If your friend already has Yahoo! Messenger and appears in your friends list, simply click the Invite ... button next to their name in the main window.

Control Who Sees Your Music:
  1. From the Yahoo! Music Jukebox Edit menu, select Preferences.
  2. Click Messenger Music.
  3. Put checkmarks in the boxes that you want, then click Apply.
  4. Click OK to close the Preferences dialog box.

Different Yahoo! ID Login Status

It's possible that you may be logged in to the Yahoo! Music Jukebox and Yahoo! Messenger with two different IDs. In that case, you will see a message alerting you of this fact, and you can choose with which ID, if either, you want to sign in to both the Yahoo! Music Jukebox and Yahoo! Messenger. If you do not see your correct music collection for sharing with friends, this might be the reason.
