Playing Music with Visualizations

You can add a visual dimension to your listening pleasure with the Visualizations feature built into the Yahoo! Music Jukebox. As your favorite songs play, you can watch a captivating pattern of light and color dance across the center pane of the Yahoo! Music Jukebox.

The follow instructions show you how to show or hide Visualizations, along with ways to change the patterns as they play across the screen.

Showing Visualizations

  1. Click View from the top-level menu
  2. Select Show Visualizations
  3. Visualizations will begin appearing in the lower pane
  4. Repeat the process to hide Visualizations

Manipulating Visualizations

You can change how the visualizations are drawn on the screen by pressing the space bar. First, click anywhere on the active visualization to select it, then press the space bar. Each time you press it, the Yahoo! Music Jukebox will randomly generate a new visualization with a different color and wave pattern. Press it as many times as you’d like to find the visualization that suits your mood.

If you’re familiar with visualizations, the Yahoo! Music Jukebox offers more advanced options for controlling the visualizations. You can review these options by clicking the visualization with your mouse and typing the ‘h’ key to reveal a keyboard shortcut menu (type ‘h’ again to turn off the menu).

Shortcut Menu Options

Onscreen prompts allow the following:

  • H/F: 'H' toggles help on and off; 'F' toggles display of the current frame rate
  • SPACE: spacebar generates a new pattern
  • Entering numbers between 0 and 9, and Shift + 0 through 9 generates new patterns
  • W/P: 'W'; changes the waveform pattern; 'P' changes the color pallette
  • L/R: 'L" locks in the current screen pattern; 'R' unlocks that pattern
  • J/K: 'J' scales wave pattern upward; 'K' scales it downward
  • Q/S/E/U/G/D/A: each letter provides a different visual effect. This one is really fun, play around with the options.
  • T: displays song title
  • C: changes pattern
  • Z/X: 'Z' increases resolution of the entire image; 'X' reduces resolution
