Move your pointer over the person’s name in your Messenger List, and click on the arrow that appears to the right. From the pull-down menu of options, click Rename…

You’ll see a box open where you can type a new name for the contact, like “Captain Bob.” Certain characters don’t work in this instance, and so will not appear if you type them.

When you’re finished, just press Enter on your keyboard. That’s it!
