How can I change the sound volume?

Can’t hear your friend? Or maybe your friend can’t hear you? Here are some tactics to try:

  1. Your sound: Single-click the Speaker icon in your system tray (at the bottom-right corner of your screen) and drag the volume to the top if you’ve been having trouble hearing. Lower it if sound has been too loud. If the little speaker icon below that volume slider has a red circle with a slash through it, your sound is muted. Click that speaker once to turn off muting.
  2. Their sound: Is someone having trouble hearing you? First, have them make sure their volume is properly adjusted and not muted. If that doesn’t work:
    • Open the Preferences window from the Yahoo! Messenger main menu. Select the Voice & Calls category.
    • Next to Microphone under Audio Settings, make sure you see a level indicator that jumps as you speak into your microphone. If you don’t, try selecting a different option under Microphone until you do.
    • If that doesn’t help, you may want to experiment with the Windows settings for your microphone. Right-click on the speaker icon in your system tray and select Recording Devices to view those settings.
