Get that pointer over the Group name in your Messenger List and right-click on it. In the window that opens, click Delete.

Now come some choices: Do you want to remove all contacts who are in this group completely from your Messenger List? If so, click that selection. You can also click to move them to another group you select from the pull-down menu. “Friends” is the default name of your basic list.
