Why am I getting a script error message?

Please be assured that Yahoo! is aware of an issue with Yahoo! Messenger where users receive script error messages or their instant messages are not displaying in the Instant Message window.

An error message of "unexpected quantifier" is one of the more common script error messages people are getting. After researching this issue, we have discovered that this appears to happen on systems that do not have the latest browser and scripting components provided through Microsoft software updates.

To resolve this issue, please make sure you have the following applications installed:

Sun Microsystems Java, that can be downloaded here.

Adobe/Macromedia Flash Player 9, that can be downloaded here.

Adobe/Macromedia Shockwave Player that can be downloaded here.

Look for "Windows Script 5.6" for your Operating System and follow the instructions for installing this file.

Internet Explorer 6 SP1 (unless you are already running a later version of Internet Explorer) can be downloaded here.

You should also visit Windows Update, a Microsoft site that checks your computer for updates and patches to correct related to your operating system and web browser components. Click here to check for updates.
