The 9.0 version of Messenger now includes mini-descriptions of public stuff for your friend's updates on the following Yahoo! Avatars and Yahoo! Buzz. More properties will be available soon!

You'll see up to 10 updates for each of your friends if they've chosen to share their content. Each update contains a clickable link that will direct you to the associated update. At this time, it's not possible to turn off updates from users on your Friends list within Messenger.
