Why do I get an error message about being behind a firewall?

If you're having difficulty sharing your webcam, or receive a message stating that you're behind a firewall or proxy server, you may have a firewall or another application interfering with the connection Yahoo! Messenger needs for using the webcam.

Please note: Using a webcam through a proxy server is currently not supported.

First, please check your connectivity settings within Yahoo! Messenger to make sure you're not connecting through a proxy server. Here's how:

  1. Select " Yahoo! Messenger."
  2. Select "Preferences."
  3. Select "Connection."
  4. Select "No Proxies."
  5. Click "OK."
  6. Close Yahoo! Messenger completely and start the program again. This should eliminate the error message.

Please Note: If you're unable to connect using the "No Proxies" option, please reverse your changes.

Are you behind a firewall? Your firewall must permit outgoing and incoming TCP connections on port 5100 to send and receive webcam video images. Please make the following changes to your firewall:

Protocol: TCP
Port: 5100

Most Internet service providers (ISPs) don't have firewalls or proxies, but you should contact your network administrator or ISP for accurate information.

Windows XP and Vista users: You may be running Window's built-in Internet Connection Firewall (ICF also known as Windows Firewall) without your knowledge.
