The latest version of Yahoo! Messenger allows you to send text messages to your friends' mobile phones and get their responses. All you need is their mobile phone number, but they have to have service with one of the following mobile phone service providers:

  • USA: AT&T, Cingular, Verizon Wireless, or T-Mobile
  • Canada: Rogers
  • India: Hutchinson, Airtel, Spice, Escotel, Reliance, Tatatele, Idea, RPG, or Oasis
  • Kuwait: Wataniya
  • Singapore: Singtel
  • Indonesia: Telkomsel and Excelcom
  • Thailand: AIS and Dtac
  • Philippines: Smart and Globe

You can send text messages in a couple of different ways.

From the main menu or an IM window:

  1. Select Actions.
  2. Select Send an SMS Message.
  3. Select the contact you want to sent a message to.
  4. Click OK.
  5. Type your message and click Send.

From Contact Details:

  1. Hover over a contact ID in your Yahoo! Messenger List or Address Book.
  2. Click the small SMS button.
  3. Type your message and click Send.

If the ID doesn't list a mobile number you won't be able to send them a text message. When you add mobile numbers, you also need to include the country dialing code. Here are a few of the more common ones:

  • USA +1
  • Canada +1
  • India +91
  • Kuwait +965
  • Singapore +65
  • Indonesia +62
  • Thailand +66
  • Philippines +63
It's that easy! Have fun texting!
