How do I send emotions to people in a chat room?

Here's how to use the Emote feature in Yahoo! Messenger Chat:

When you're using Yahoo! Messenger to talk in a Yahoo! Chat room, there's a button on your chat toolbar that has a red exclamation mark ( ! ) on it. If you press this, you'll get a list of emotions that you can use. Emotions describe to the other people in the chat how you're feeling or what you're doing.

For example, if you double-click on "Listen", it prints out "[your Yahoo! ID] listens attentively". Experiment with the different emotions to see what they all do!

Here's how you can make your own custom emotions:

  1. Click your Start in Windows.
  2. Go to Find, then click on files or folders. A new window will launch where you can search for files on your computer.
  3. Where it says Named, type in emote.dat.
  4. Click Find Now. When the file is found, double-click on it to launch it.
  5. You'll be asked what you want to open it with. Choose the option to select the program from a list. You'll then chose "Notepad” to open the emote file.
  6. Once the file is open, add new emotes using the correct format listed within the file.
  7. The Format you need to use to make the custom emotes is as follows:

Title\ What the emote will say by itself\ What it will say when it interacts with another user

Please use %s where you'd like the Nickname of the user you're emoting to.

  8. Click Save.
  9. Click Close.
  10. Restart Yahoo! Messenger, and you'll find your new Emotions there!
