Here's how to use the Emote feature in Yahoo! Messenger Chat:
When you're using Yahoo! Messenger to talk in a Yahoo! Chat room, there's a button on your chat toolbar that has a red exclamation mark ( ! ) on it. If you press this, you'll get a list of emotions that you can use. Emotions describe to the other people in the chat how you're feeling or what you're doing.
For example, if you double-click on "Listen", it prints out "[your Yahoo! ID] listens attentively". Experiment with the different emotions to see what they all do!
Here's how you can make your own custom emotions:
- Click your Start in Windows.
- Go to Find, then click on files or folders. A new window will launch where you can search for files on your computer.
- Where it says Named, type in emote.dat.
- Click Find Now. When the file is found, double-click on it to launch it.
- You'll be asked what you want to open it with. Choose the option to select the program from a list. You'll then chose "Notepad” to open the emote file.
- Once the file is open, add new emotes using the correct format listed within the file.
- The Format you need to use to make the custom emotes is as follows:
Title\ What the emote will say by itself\ What it will say when it interacts with another user
Please use %s where you'd like the Nickname of the user you're emoting to.
- Click Save.
- Click Close.
- Restart Yahoo! Messenger, and you'll find your new Emotions there!
