Replace an article

Does logging in to Yahoo! Mail always take a long time? If so, it may be because caching is not enabled in your browser.

Click the link for your browser for instructions on how to enable caching.

Note: If you are using a browser or an operating system that is not listed here, please check your browser's help for instructions on enabling caching.

Internet Explorer 6.0 and newer

  1. From the Tools menu, select Internet Options. The Internet Options dialog box (in version 6.0, it is the Options dialog box) appears. Click the Advanced tab.

  2. Scroll down to Security and make sure that Empty Temporary Internet Files folder when browser is closed isn’t checked. Click the General tab.

  3. In the section labeled Temporary Internet Files or Browsing History (depending upon your version of Internet Explorer), click Settings. The Temporary Internet Files and History Settings dialog box appears.

  4. Set the following:
    • Under Check for newer versions of stored pages, select Automatically.
    • In the Disk space to use box, select or type a number from 50 to 1024.
  5. Click OK to close the Temporary Internet Files and History Settings dialog box.
  6. Click OK to close the Internet Options dialog box and save your changes.

Firefox 2.0.0.1 and newer (Mac OS X)

  1. From the Firefox menu, select Preferences. The Preferences dialog box appears.

  2. In the top bar, click Advanced.
  3. Under Offline Storage, in the box between Use up to and MB of space for the cache, type or select a number greater than 0. (Setting this number to zero disables the cache.)
  4. Close the Preferences dialog box.

Caching is now enabled.

Firefox 2.0.0.1 and newer (Windows)

  1. From the Tools menu, select Internet Options. The Options dialog box appears.

  2. In the top bar, click Advanced.
  3. Under Offline Storage, in the box between Use up to and MB of space for the cache, type or select a number greater than 0. (Setting this number to zero disables the cache.)
  4. Click OK to close the dialog box and save your settings.

Caching is now enabled.

Safari 3 and newer (Mac OS X)

  1. From the Safari menu, select Preferences. The General dialog box appears.

  2. In the top section of the dialog box, click Security. The dialog box name changes to Security.
  3. In the box between Database storage and allowed before asking, use the pull-down menu to select a number.
  4. Click Done, and then close the Security dialog box.

Caching is now enabled.

Safari 3 and newer (Windows)

  1. From the Action menu (it’s near the upper-right corner of the Safari window and looks like a gear), select Preferences. The General dialog box appears.

  2. In the top section of the dialog box, click Security. The dialog box name changes to Security.
  3. In the box next to Default space for database storage, use the pull-down menu to select a number.
  4. Click the red X button.

Caching is now enabled.

Opera (Mac OS X)

  1. From the Opera menu, select Preferences. The Preferences dialog box appears.

  2. In the top bar in the dialog box, click Advanced.
  3. Next to Disk cache, use the pull-down menu to select a number.
  4. Click OK to close the Preferences dialog box.
  5. Caching is now enabled.

Note: Another way to make Opera run faster on a slow network is to enable Opera Turbo. To do this:

  1. From the Opera menu, select Preferences. The Preferences dialog box appears.

  2. In the top bar in the dialog box, click Web Pages.
  3. Next to Opera Turbo, use the pull-down menu to select Automatic or On.
  4. Click OK to close the Preferences dialog box.

Opera Turbo is now enabled.

Opera (Windows)

  1. From the Tools menu, select Preferences. The Preferences dialog box appears.

  3. Next to Default space for database storage, use the pull-down menu to select a number.
  4. Click OK to close the Preferences dialog box.

Caching is now enabled.

Note: Another way to make Opera run faster on a slow network is to enable Opera Turbo. To do this:

  1. From the Tools menu, select Preferences. The Preferences dialog box appears.

  3. Next to Opera Turbo, use the pull-down menu to select Automatic or On.
  4. Click OK to close the Preferences dialog box.

Opera Turbo is now enabled.

Google Chrome

Automatic caching is built into Google Chrome. You can’t turn it off or set the cache size.

Storing files such as webpages and images in a temporary area on your hard drive so they don’t have to be downloaded again.
