You can read your Yahoo! Mail using Mozilla Thunderbird. Here’s how:

Thunderbird Version 3

  1. From the File menu, select File then New.
  2. Select Mail Account. Mail Account Setup opens.
  3. Fill in your account details as follows:

    • Your Name: Type your name as you'd like it to appear in email (for example, Jo Bloggs).
    • Email address: Type your full Yahoo! Mail Plus email address (for example, jo.bloggs@yahoo.com)
    • Password: Enter your account password.
Click Next or Continue, depending upon your operating system.
  4. Thunderbird will display settings for your account. Click Manual Setup.
  5. On the Server Settings page:
    • Change the Server Name to "pop.mail.yahoo.com" (with or without "plus." at the beginning, depending on your account type).
    • Make sure the Incoming User Name is your Yahoo! ID (your email address without the "@domain.com").
    • If you want to leave your mail on the server after you have downloaded it, make sure to select Leave messages on server and Until I delete them.
  6. In the left column of the Account Settings dialog box, scroll down to the bottom and select Outgoing Server (SMTP). In the right half of the pane, select the Yahoo! Mail SMTP server. Click Edit. SMTP Server opens:
    • Change the Server Name to "smtp.mail.yahoo.com" (with or without "plus." at the beginning, depending on your account type).
    • Make sure the Port is 465.
    • Select the Use name and password checkbox.
    • Make sure the User Name is your Yahoo! ID (your email address without the "@domain.com").
    • Make sure that the Connection Security is SSL/TLS.
  7. Click OK to save and close, then OK again to close the Account Settings window.

You are now set up to send and receive Yahoo! Mail using Thunderbird.

Troubleshooting tips

If you still can’t send Yahoo! Mail from Thunderbird, you might be accessing the Internet through an ISP that is blocking the SMTP port. If this is the case, try using port 587 when sending email via Yahoo!'s SMTP server. To make this change:

  1. From the Tools menu, select Account Settings. The Account Settings dialog box opens.
  2. In the left column of the Account Settings dialog box, scroll down to the bottom and select Outgoing Server (SMTP). In the right half of the pane, select the Yahoo! Mail SMTP server. Click Edit. The SMTP Server dialog box appears.
  3. In the SMTP Server dialog box, under Settings, change the Port value to 587.
  4. Click OK to save your changes.
Internet Service Provider: The service providing access to the Internet.
Port: A software connection computers use to exchange data directly.
