Configure Yahoo! Mail Plus to send and receive all your email from one place. Save all that time you take signing in and signing out, opening and closing different applications, etc. All your email is at your fingertips—in Yahoo! Mail Plus!

Yahoo! Mail Plus can store settings for up to 10 different accounts at one time.

To complete the process, you'll need to find out the mail server name for each account you wish to add. This is the only step that requires anything more than clicking or typing—it requires a conversation. To get this information, talk to either the Internet service provider you use to connect to the Internet, or the network administrator who controls the system at your work or school. Verify with them that it's a POP server, because only POP servers are supported at this time. Yep, P-O-P—they'll know what you mean. (It stands for Post Office Protocol.)

You can either add an account with Yahoo! Mail's automatic delivery settings, or you can add an account and manually set the delivery options yourself.

Delivery options include:

  • choosing the Yahoo! Mail folder you want new messages to go into
  • deciding whether or not emails in the other accounts should stay in those other Inboxes after you read them in Yahoo! Mail
  • choosing to get either all your messages from the other account, or only the new ones
  • finally, you can apply your Yahoo! filters to that other mail, if you want.

Use the first set of instructions to get Yahoo!'s automatic settings. Use the second instructions if you want to manually set the delivery options.

To add an account using Yahoo!'s automatic settings:

  1. Click Options in the upper-right corner of the screen and select Mail Options.
  2. From the list on the left, click Accounts.
  3. Click Add or edit an account.
  4. Click Add.
  5. Enter a name for the account, like "Work," or "School," or "Chocolate!." Then click Continue.
  6. After "Name:," type the name you want people getting email from this address to see. The usual choice is: Your name!
  7. Enter the email address you'll be sending from in the "Email:" field. You are required to verify that you own this account.
  8. Click Continue. The following steps are only required if you wish to receive mail from this account, too. If you don't want to receive mail from this account, click the "Skip this Step" button at the bottom of the page and skip to step 11 below.
  9. Enter the server name for this account. This is the info you got from either your Internet service provider or network administrator.
  10. Enter your user name and password. Note The user name is different than your email address. Typically it's the text in your email address before the "@" symbol. Your password is whatever you use to access this other account.
  11. Select an indicator color to mark messages received from this account.
  12. Click Setup Mail Server.
  13. To protect your privacy and prevent unauthorized use of this feature, you're required to verify that you own this account. Clicking Send Verification sends the verification letter to the email address you're adding. When you receive the verification letter, enter the Confirmation Code along with your Yahoo! password on the following page. Upon verification, your new account is added.

To add an account and manually set the delivery options:

  1. Click Options in the upper-right corner of the screen and select Mail Options.
  2. From the list on the left, click Accounts.
  3. Click Add or edit an account.
  4. Click Add.
  5. In the upper-right area of the page, click Configure Account Manually.
  6. Enter a name for the account. For example, "Work," or "School," or "Ted."
  7. In "Sending Mail," after "Name:," enter the name you want people to see when they get email from this account. The usual choice is: Your name!
  8. Enter the email address you want to send from in the "Email:" field. You are required to verify that you own this account.
  9. If you want to have replies go to a different address than the one you're sending from, enter that address in the "Reply To:" field. This step is optional.
  10. Enter your POP mail server name. This is the information you got from either your Internet service provider or your network administrator.
  11. Enter the user name and password for the account you're adding. The user name is different than your email address. Typically it is the text in your email address before the "@" symbol. Your password is whatever you use to access this email account.
  12. Select an indicator color to mark messages received from this account.
  13. Designate a folder to route incoming messages to.
  14. In the Options category, check the appropriate boxes:
    • Override default POP port: If you know your POP server uses a port other than 110, enter it here.
    • Leave mail on POP server: Specify whether messages retrieved to your Yahoo! account also remain in your external mail account or whether they are deleted from your external mail server.
    • Retrieve new messages only: Specify whether Yahoo! Mail retrieves only the new messages in your external mail account, or all messages.
  15. Click Setup Mail Server.
  16. You are required to verify that you own this account. Clicking Send Verification sends the verification letter to the email address you are adding. When you receive the verification letter, enter the Confirmation Code along with your Yahoo! password on the following page. Upon verification, your new account is added.

Whew! All right. Now that you've added another account to send mail from, how do you do it?

On your Compose screen, you'll now have a "From" pull-down menu located above the "To:" field. Select the address you wish to mail from on the pull-down menu.

If you prefer to send from one address more often than another, you can set an address as default by doing the following:

  1. From the Mail Accounts page (click Options in the upper-right corner of the screen, then from the list on the left click Accounts, then Add or edit an account), click once on the address you want to set as your default address.
  2. In the account information display to the right, click Make Default.

Yahoo! Mail retrieves messages from your external (POP) mail accounts only when you request it. You'll find these messages by clicking the arrow on the right end of the "Check Mail" button, and selecting the account.

Currently, you can't configure Yahoo! Mail to retrieve messages from a Web-based email account or another Yahoo! Mail Plus account unless it's been set up for POP access. But you can send from another Yahoo! Mail account by adding it to your Mail Accounts list to send from.
