How do I reply to a message?

To reply to a message you received in Yahoo! Mail:

  1. Click the message to open it.
  2. Click the "Reply" button located at the top of the Inbox. If you would like to reply to everyone who got the email (if you were part of a group of people who received it), click the down arrow on the right side of the Reply button, and select "Reply To All." This sends your reply to all recipients of the original message, as well as the sender.
  3. A Compose window opens. If you want to add more recipients, you can type in additional email addresses.

  4. Depending on your "Message Actions" setting (see box below), you'll see all, part, or none of the sender's original message (the message you're replying to) in your Compose window.

    To adjust this setting:

    1. Click "Options" in the upper-right corner of your Yahoo! Mail page
    2. Under "Management" click "General Preferences."
    3. Choose to include all, part, or none of the original message in your reply. If you make any changes, click the "Save" button in the upper or lower-left corner.

If you chose to include the message, you'll see it in the Compose window with ">" symbols repeated down its left margin.

  5. Type your reply. If you chose to include the sender's original message in your reply, you can type in the area above it, below it, or even within the sender's message itself -- to respond to different parts of their email bit by bit. There's an example of this below. Click the cursor wherever you want to begin typing.
  6. Tip: To make your reply easy to read, it helps to press Enter a couple of times to add space. In this example, we clicked the cursor after the question mark, then pressed Enter twice to start the line that answers the question:

    >for three years. Anyway, how's Mike doing?

Mike is great! I'll tell him you said Hi.

    >We miss him. The house where he used to live is

  7. Click "Send" to send your reply.

Note: If you're in the middle of composing a message and you need to stop, click the "Save Draft" button to the right of "Send." This saves your uncompleted message in your Drafts folder. Come back whenever you want to finish it.

Note: Before you leave the computer, it's a good idea to click the "Sign Out" link just below where it says "Welcome, yourname." This way no one else gets to use (or abuse) your account while you're away.
