What is a Boolean search?

A Boolean search is an advanced search using Boolean logic. The keywords field in Yahoo! HotJobs Recruiter Search uses Boolean logic.

The following rules are used in a Boolean search.

  • AND returns only results containing all the specified words or phrases (sales and marketing returns resumes containing both words, not necessarily used together)
  • OR returns results containing at least one of the specified words or phrases (sales or marketing returns resumes containing at least one of the two words)
  • NOT excludes results containing the specified words or phrases that follow "not" (sales not marketing returns resumes that contain the word “sales” but do not contain the word “marketing”)
  • ( ) around keywords groups them together, so (sales and marketing) not administration returns resumes that contain both "sales" and "marketing" but do not contain "administration."
  • " " around keywords returns results in which the words appear in the specified order, so "sales and marketing experience" returns resumes containing those words in that order.
  • * allows partial matches. A search for sales* returns resumes containing words like "salesperson" and "salesman."
