The smiley face shows your "online status." You’ll see it when you click Members, on the left.

When you’re logged in to any of the following services, other Yahoo! members see the smiley face next to your name, and can then contact you by sending an instant message:

  • Yahoo! Mail
  • Yahoo! Messenger
  • Yahoo! Chat
  • Yahoo! Games

If you'd like to send instant messages to other Yahoo! users, download Yahoo! Messenger. Or, just chat in Yahoo! Mail…it’s all good.

If you don't want other people to know when you’re online, you can disable the online status feature at any time. Here's how:

  1. If you are logged into the following services, then Log out first:
    • Yahoo! Groups
    • Yahoo! Mail
    • Yahoo! Messenger
    • Yahoo! Chat
    • Yahoo! Games
  2. Go to the Yahoo! Profiles Page, and sign in there.
  3. In the upper-right corner, click View My Profiles.
  4. You'll see a checkbox that says Check the box to hide my online status from other users.
  5. Checking the box will hide your online status. If you leave the box unchecked, other people will know when you're online.
  6. Make sure to click the Finished Editing button when you're done.
