Joining a group in Yahoo! Groups is a quick and easy process. You can join a group in three ways:

  • Go to the group’s page
  • Respond to an invitation to join
  • Join the group’s mailing list

If you’re not sure which group you want to join, start by browsing the Groups Directory on the main Yahoo! Groups page or searching for a group by topic.

To see what groups are available:

  1. Click the link above to go to the Groups page. (Another way to reach the Groups page: on the Yahoo! home page, mouse over View Yahoo! Sites and select Groups from the list that displays on the right.)

Selecting a property from main Yahoo page
  2. Enter a topic for the type of group you’re looking for in the Find a Yahoo! Group box, and click Search (In the example below, the search term is “tibetan terrier”). Alternatively, click a relevant topic under Browse Groups.

    Finding and browsing groups

To join a group:

  1. When you find a group you want to join, click the group’s name, and its page displays.

  2. Click the Join This Group! button in the upper-right corner of the group’s page. (Alternatively, you can click the Join This Group! link beneath the group’s picture to go directly to the Preferences page described in Step 4, below.)

  3. If you’re not already signed in to your Yahoo! account, enter your Yahoo! ID and password in the Sign In to Yahoo! box that appears. If you don’t have a Yahoo! account, you can create one by clicking Sign Up at the top of the page.
  4. On the Join This Group page that appears, set your membership preferences:
    • The public profile you want displayed to the group
    • The email address at which you'd like to receive group messages
    • How you want group messages delivered
    • The display format for email messages you receive
    Email preferences for groups
  5. Click Join in the lower-right corner of the page.

Respond to an invitation to join

If you receive an email invitation to join a group that you’d like to join, click Join this group!.

On the page that appears describing the group, click Join the group. If you prefer to simply receive emails from the group, click join the mailing list instead (or follow the instructions in the next section).

Subscribe to a group’s mailing list only

If you’re not sure you want to join a particular group, you can try it out by signing up just to receive email messages from the group. However, when you’re only on the mailing list, you can’t access the group's web features (photos, files, links, polls, and calendar).

To subscribe to a group's mailing list via email:

  1. Send a blank email to groupname-subscribe@yahoogroups.com, making sure to replace groupname with the actual name of the group (for example, allabouttibetanterriers-subscribe@yahoogroups.com).
  2. To activate your subscription, just reply to the confirmation message you receive from the group.

Manage your groups and settings

You can manage and revise your groups and subscription settings at any time.

  1. Go to the My Groups page by clicking Manage on the Groups page.

    Manage link for groups
  2. On the My Groups page, click Edit My Groups.

    Edit My Groups tab

There you can do the following tasks:
    • View information about all the groups you’ve joined
    • Change your message-delivery options
    • View and edit your member profile
    • Manage your group memberships
    • Leave a group
