How can I display an RSS feed on my site?

RSS (Really Simple Syndication) is a format used to distribute headlines and similar content across the Internet. Owners of blogs and other web sites that update their content frequently, including many news organizations, can make their new posts and content available in files called RSS feeds.

Reviewing your favorite RSS feeds is easy with a newsreader, a simple tool such as My Yahoo! that is specifically designed to gather and display RSS information. But any site can display an RSS feed with a little work.

To display a feed on your own site (headlines from your business's blog, or headlines of interest to your customers), you'll need to:

  1. Locate the RSS feed's web address, or source.
  2. Convert the feed into a format that can be displayed in an HTML page.
  3. Add the converted code to one of your pages.

Please remember that when you display content from another web site on your own, you are virtually copying that web site's content into your own page. To avoid possible copyright infringement, we recommend that you always seek permission if you'd like to display content from another site on your page, and that you accompany this content with appropriate information about the author or source.

Step 1. Locate the Feed Source
To find the URL, or source, of a web site's RSS feed:

  1. Go to the site or do a quick web search to find it.
  2. Look for a little orange button like this: . This indicates that the site syndicates its content. Usually the button points directly to the site's RSS file.
  3. To find the RSS URL, right-click on the orange XML button and click "Copy Shortcut," or click on the "XML" button, then copy the URL from the address bar of your browser (select "Copy" from the browser's Edit menu).

Step 2. Convert the Feed
You can find many tools on the Web that can help you convert a feed for use on your site. We found a useful list of tools on the RSS Specifications web site, such as the following:

Generally a tool will ask you to enter the source (URL) of your feed and choose some display settings in a simple form, then convert the feed into a few lines of HTML or JavaScript code.

Important note: Most RSS feed convertors generate code that works with the convertor site itself to keep your RSS feed display working. Some of these sites may limit the number of times your site can ask for updates to the RSS feed, so be sure to read the tool's documentation carefully.

Step 3. Add the Converted Code
You can copy and paste this code into your web page the same way you'd insert an add-on. Add the code to your page in the spot where you'd like the headlines from the RSS feed to appear.
