Chart Basics

Overview

Yahoo! Finance provides charts of stocks, mutual funds, and market indices. To obtain a chart, retrieve a quote as you normally would and click the "Basic Chart" link under Charts in the left column.

When a chart is displayed, use the controls (which appear as links) above the chart image to change the date range, plot type, and price scale (additional details about the display options).

Comparison charts can also be generated for up to four symbols by inputting valid symbols into the comparison form (separated by spaces), or by checking the available index options and clicking the "Compare" button (read more about the comparison feature).

To fully take advantage of the capabilities Yahoo! Finance charts offer, click the "Technical Analysis" link under Charts in the left column (more on this below).

Technical Analysis

Technical analysis charts allow users to access advanced charting capabilities beyond the basic chart features, such as moving averages, indicators, and overlays.

Selecting links from the "Moving Averages" and "Overlays" listings result in new data being superimposed over the initial price chart, while items selected from the "Indicators" list result in supplementary charts being drawn below the main price chart.

Unlike the display settings, where only one option can be selected at a time, several moving averages, indicators, and overlays can be enabled at once. To do so, simply select the items you wish to enable by clicking the appropriate link. When a moving average, indicator, or overlay is activated, it is bolded. To toggle the selected item off, simply click the link a second time.

Please note that a maximum four overlays and moving averages can be activated at any one time. If you have reached this limit and click a new overlay or moving average, the most recent item selected is enabled, and the oldest item selected is turned off. The same limit applies to the indicators (four-item limit at any given time).

Read more about moving averages, indicators, and overlays.

How often are charts updated?

During market hours, 1-day and 5-day charts are updated continuously (on a delayed basis). 3-month, 6-month, and 1-year charts are updated nightly. 2-year, 5-year, and max charts are updated weekly(every Friday after market close).

Are charts split adjusted?

Charts are adjusted for splits. Charts are not adjusted for dividends or capital distributions (by mutual funds).

Why doesn't the 52-week range match charts?

Charts might not appear to match the 52-week range reported in quotes because charts (a year or longer) only display closing prices, while the 52-week range includes intra-day highs and lows.

Why does the S&P comparison keep showing up?

You have selected the vs. S&P 500 as your default "Big Chart Type" setting. Click here to turn it off.

Why do 50 and 200 day moving averages keep showing up?

You have selected the Moving Average option as your default "Big Chart Type" setting. Click here to turn it off.

Why am I limited to the number of comparisons, overlays and indicators I can display?

The charts get increasingly busy with each added comparison, overlay, and indicator. We have set the threshold above the limit needed for most users.
