How do the maps in Yahoo! FareChase work?

We are pleased to offer Yahoo! FareChase users the ability to have a visual experience while searching for hotels by integrating with street level, satellite, and hybrid maps from Yahoo! Maps.

How do I use the map?

The map plots the same list of 10 hotels that are visible on your search results list. If you page through your search results list, the map updates as well. The numbers on your hotel search results list correspond to the numbered icons on the map. You can pan on the map by clicking your left mouse button and dragging in the direction that you want to go. You can zoom in or out of the map using the zoom control on the upper-left corner of the map. If you want to switch between street level, satellite, and hybrid maps, click the control options in the upper-left corner of the map.

What does the "Update my hotel results when I zoom or drag map" checkbox option do?

This option allows you to use the map to find hotels only in the area specified by the map—it essentially turns the map into a "filter" for your results. For example, if you zoom in to a neighborhood, then your search results list updates to show only those results in the neighborhood. You can uncheck the box if you don't want your list of hotels displayed to change when you pan or zoom on the map. If you use the map to view only hotels in a specific area (checkbox on) and then perform additional filtering from the options on the left, the filtering is applied to only those hotels that fit in the chosen area of the map.

What if I see very few hotel results when I use the map?

You've probably zoomed or panned into an area that does not have many hotels or you've selected refinement options that exclude many hotels. To see a broader set of hotels, either zoom out on the map or change your refinement options on the left side of the screen.

Why does my screen say "Updating" so often when I use the map?

If you have selected the "Update my hotel results when I zoom or drag map" option, then Yahoo! FareChase updates the hotel results to show only hotels in the area of the map each time you change the area on the map.

What do the restaurant and attraction icons mean?

We've added the option for you to add nearby attractions, restaurants, and airports (and more!) to the map of your hotel search so that you can make a more educated decision. The items we display are based on their popularity from rankings of the Yahoo! community.

I've selected to see restaurants on my map but I don't see any?

Yahoo! FareChase shows 10 of the top 100 restaurants at a time in any major city. If you have zoomed in to or panned to an area that doesn't have any restaurants amongst Yahoo's 100 most popular, then you can zoom out or pan to another area. If you wish to look for a specific restaurant or restaurants in a specific location, the Yahoo! Local web site provides the most comprehensive information.

Why don't I see a major attraction that I know about on the map?

Yahoo! FareChase shows 10 of the top 30 attractions at a time in any major city. There are several reasons why an attraction you think should be displayed is not. That attraction might not be ranked among the Yahoo's top 30. Or, an attraction might not have a precise street address, which prevents us from mapping it. If you feel strongly that an attraction should be displayed, feel free to submit a comment via the feedback link found on Yahoo! FareChase at the bottom of the page.
