The Yahoo! Directory is made up of 14 main subject headings or top-level categories. Every site listed in the Yahoo! Directory is placed somewhere within these 14 major categories. Each major category contains many sub-categories, which organize information from the general to the specific.
Keep these guidelines in mind in order to find the most relevant Yahoo! Directory category for your site:
Be specific
When choosing a category from which to suggest your site, be as specific as possible. To find the most appropriate subcategory, try searching the Yahoo! Directory for words that relate to your website, and take a look at the "Related Categories" that appear in your search results.
Commercial or non-commercial?
Does your site sell something, promote goods and services, or represent a company that sells products and/or services? If so, then the site belongs somewhere in the Business and Economy section of the Yahoo! Directory. Usually the site belongs in sub-categories within Business and Economy > Business to Business or in Business and Economy > Shopping and Services. If you have a commercial site, you'll need to submit it through the fee-based Yahoo! Directory Submit process. For more information about Yahoo! Directory Submit, please read our Directory Submit FAQs.
Is your site regionally specific?
Local business? Regional history? neighborhood sports club? If the site you are suggesting is of particular interest or relevance to a specific geographic region, then suggest it to a regional category. For example, a museum in New York would be suggested within the "regional" area of the Directory specific to New York Museums.
Regional > U.S. States > New York > Cities > Manhattan > Entertainment and Arts > Museums and Exhibits
If your site is both regionally specific and commercial, then suggest it to the appropriate Business and Economy category. In other words, let us know it's a commercial site, and we'll take care of the regional placement.
Personal?
All personal homepages live in the Society and Culture > People > Personal Homepages category. Is your page all about you? Go to this category and suggest your listing from there.
When the category fits...
Are you suggesting a site for a music magazine? A site for a real estate agent in Tucson, Arizona? A hockey fan page? A quick-and-dirty guide for beginning investors? If you're suggesting a business site, search the Directory for your competitors and see which Category they are listed in.
Browse and search your way through the Yahoo! Directory to find the right category for your site. When you search, look for sites in the results that are similar to yours and click the site's category link to go to that category page.
When you are on the right category page, suggest your site by clicking the "Suggest a Site" link located at the top of the page.
