When and why was Yahoo! Briefcase closed?

Yahoo! Briefcase, which had been a Yahoo! service for nearly ten years, was shut down on March 30, 2009. We made the decision to end the service after seeing a steady and significant decline in usage over the past few years. The vast majority of our users have turned instead to newer, more functional services, such as Yahoo! Mail and Flickr. These newer services provide more storage capacity for today’s space-hungry files and more powerful sharing capabilities than Briefcase could.

On January 28, 2009—more than two months before the shutdown—we sent email to notify all Briefcase account holders of the shutdown to give them ample time to pull their files from the site. In addition, a shutdown notice was posted on the Yahoo! Briefcase website. Unfortunately, if you never saw the email or posting and didn’t retrieve files you had saved within Briefcase folders, you can’t access them now.

We appreciate your use of Yahoo! products and services and hope you’ll find worthy replacements for Briefcase. Discontinuing Briefcase allows us to provide better service and support for users as they switch to more capable and broadly used products.
