How is WHIP calculated?

The category of WHIP is calculated as follows:

WHIP = (Walks + Hits) / Innings Pitched

When determining team WHIP, only the raw stats accumulated by each player are used to determine WHIP. Individual WHIP totals are not relevant.

For example, consider the following two pitchers:

Smith: .1 IP, 4 H, 1 BB = 15.00 WHIP

Jones: 3 IP, 1 H, 2 BB = 1.00 WHIP

Total: 3.1 IP, 5 H, 3 BB = 2.4 WHIP

Since these two pitchers have combined to allow eight walks + hits in 3 1/3 innings, their combined WHIP is 2.40.

It would not be possible to arrive at this total by adding their individual WHIPs and dividing by two.
