How can I become more accurate at reporting abuse?

Community moderation depends on the reporting accuracy of Answers members. Sending false reports will lower your trust level and subsequently your influence in future reporting, so don't hit the Report It button unless you are sure it is abusive.

We created a quick pop-quiz to help you gauge how well you know the Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. Have fun!

Are the following questions abuse or not abuse? (Please assume these are stand-alone questions with no additional details.)

  1. What do you think of my avatar?
  2. Will having sex during pregnancy hurt the baby?
  3. What year was George Washington born? (posted under Homework Help)
  4. Is the word ***** (profane word for female dog) allowed in mainstream media by the FCC?
  5. What should I eat today?
  6. How do you say "I love you" in Spanish?
  7. Where can I get an abortion in California?
  8. Is a low IQ required to be a (liberal/conservative/feminist/etc)?
  9. How many answers will this question get?
  10. How did (insert Nickname) get so many points?

KEY

  1. What do you think of my avatar?
This question is in violation for chatting, and something that we consider to be not knowledge-worthy, meaning there is no value to knowing the answer to this question. The only purpose of this question is to engage others in chatting with you, not to seek knowledge.
Learn more: What is considered "chat"?
  2. Will having sex during pregnancy hurt the baby?
This is a legitimate health question. It's not considered a violation as adult content because it is not sexually graphic in its wording.
Learn more: Can I ask questions about sex?
  3. What year was George Washington born?
This question is not considered abusive, even if it's being asked by someone seeking homework help. Please note that answers must attempt to answer the question, so if you say, "Look it up yourself," you will be in violation. Homework help questions are OK on Answers unless they violate our guidelines in other ways. For example, "Write my paper for 10 points" would be point-gaming (or, "not a question").
Learn more: Is it OK to ask for homework help?
  4. Is the word "bitch" allowed in mainstream media by the FCC?
This question contains profanity, but it's not being used in an abusive way (i.e. to insult others), so it is one of the rare examples of when it's OK on Answers.
Learn more: Is it OK to use profanity?
  5. What should I eat today?
This question is in violation for chatting, and something that we consider to be not knowledge-worthy, meaning there is no value to knowing the answer to this question. The only purpose of this question is to engage others in chatting with you, not to seek knowledge.
Learn more: What is considered "chat"?
  6. How do you say "I love you" in Spanish?
Although it is against the guidelines to ask and answer in the wrong language (for example, asking questions in French on the Answers US site), it is ok to answer in another language if the question is asking how to say something in that language.
Learn more: Can I ask questions in other languages?
  7. Where can I get an abortion in California?
Regardless of your personal beliefs, if a question does not violate the Community Guidelines or Terms of Service, you should not report it. While this is a controversial topic, it is a legitimate question and the procedure is legal for all ages. Attacking the asker in your answer is considered a violation.
Learn more: When does a strong opinion become a violation?
  8. Is a low IQ required to be a (liberal/conservative/feminist/etc)?
Although this question is written in the form of a question, its purpose is not to seek knowledge but to rant about a specific group of people. A community sharing opinions and experience is what makes Answers a fun and engaging place. However, it's up to each member to seek and provide knowledge on controversial topics with respect and tolerance, and refrain from using Answers as a soapbox.
Learn more: What does it mean when you say we have to follow the question-and-answer format?
Why is it important to share and be courteous on Yahoo! Answers?
  9. How many answers will this question get?
This is considered point-gaming. Questions and answers posted for the sole purpose of gaining points, ratings, stars, etc., are considered in violation.
Learn more: What is considered cheating?
  10. How did (insert Nickname) get so many points?
This is considered chatting for calling out another user by name. If you'd like to engage personally with another member, please do so through other communications channels such as email and IM (if they allow contact by other members).
