I'm getting errors when trying to receive POP mail. What's wrong?

There are a variety of reasons you might have problems receiving Verizon Yahoo! Mail in your favorite email reader. We’ve provided a checklist of things to look for.

If you continue to have problems, contact Verizon Yahoo! Customer Care.

Do you have a subscription to Verizon Yahoo! Mail?

You must subscribe to the Verizon Yahoo! Mail service or participate in a partner email service to get POP mail access through your email reader.

Note: If you are receiving Verizon Yahoo! Mail through an ISP that uses Verizon Yahoo! Mail, POP access is included.

Have you correctly set up POP access in Verizon Yahoo! Mail?

To check this, follow these steps:

  1. In the upper-right of your Verizon Yahoo! Mail page, click Options.

    Mail Plus Options command
  2. From the Options menu, select Mail Options. The Mail Options page appears.

    POP and Forwarding options
  3. In the left pane, click POP & Forwarding, and then in the right pane, click Set up or edit POP & Forwarding. A separate POP Access & Forwarding page appears.

    Web and POP Access settings
  4. Make sure Web & POP Access is selected. If Forwarding is selected, you are not POP-enabled, because these two separate features can't be used at the same time. If you make a change here, be sure to click Save in the upper-left corner when you're done.

Have you correctly configured your email reader?

Here are the generic settings for email programs:

  • Incoming mail server settings
    • POP server: plus.pop.mail.yahoo.com
    • Use SSL
    • Port: 995
  • Outgoing mail server (SMTP) settings
    • SMTP server: plus.smtp.mail.yahoo.com
    • Use SSL
    • Port: 465
    • Use authentication
    • Account Name/Login Name: Your Verizon Yahoo! Mail ID (your email address without the "@yahoo.com", for example, “testing80”)
    • Email Address: Your Verizon Yahoo! Mail address (for example, testing80@yahoo.com)
    • Password: Your Verizon Yahoo! Mail password

For detailed information on entering these settings into various email readers, please follow the instructions for your email reader listed here.

Did you verify your email address with Verizon Yahoo! Mail?

If you are accessing the Internet through one of Verizon Yahoo!’s partners, you may need to verify any alternate email address (from a different Internet service) with Verizon Yahoo! Mail before you can receive mail from another ISP in Verizon Yahoo! Mail or your email reader. Please follow these steps to add an email address and verify it:

  1. In the upper-right of your Verizon Yahoo! Mail page, click Options.

    Mail Plus Options command
  2. From the Options menu, select Mail Options. The Mail Options page appears.

    Accounts options
  3. In the left pane, click Accounts, and then in the right pane, click Add or edit an account. A separate Mail Accounts page appears.

    Adding an account
  4. Click Add. The Add Account wizard appears.

    Second Account option
  5. In the Account Name box, type a name for your own reference (for example, Work, School, Second Account), and click Continue.

    Adding account info
  6. Complete the following information:
    • Name: The name you want the person receiving email from this address to see.
    • Email: The alternate email address for which you would like to receive mail. We’ll send a confirmation code to this email address.
  7. Click Continue. The Setup Mail Server page appears.

    Setting up the mail server
  8. Do one of two things:
    • If you are only concerned with sending mail, click Skip This Step and continue to the next step in these instructions.
    • If you want to receive your alternate email using your Verizon Yahoo! partner ISP, complete the following information:
      • Mail Server: The Internet address of the mail server that hosts the account you want to access, for example, “pop.hostname.com.”
      • Username: The alternate email address for which you’d like to receive mail. We’ll send a confirmation code to this email address.
      • Password: Enter the password of the alternate email account. Verizon Yahoo! encrypts the password before storing it so your information is safe.
      • Indicator: Select a color to appear in your Verizon Yahoo! Mail Inbox to indicate email sent to this account.
      • Options: You can choose to select any or all of the following:

Override POP port: Select this to use a port other than the standard port (110). If you select this option, enter a different port number in the box on this line.

Leave mail on POP server: If you want to leave your Verizon Yahoo! Mail on the server after you have downloaded it, select this option. If you want to have your messages deleted from the Verizon Yahoo! server after you’ve downloaded them, deselect this option.

Retrieve new messages only: Select this option to download only messages sent to your Inbox since the last time you checked it.

Use filters: This lets you use filters to sort messages before you read them.
When you are finished, click Setup Mail Server. The Verify Account page appears.

    Verify Account page
  9. Click Send Verification. A second Verify Account page appears, and email containing the confirmation code is sent to the account you named.
