What do the emoticon faces and terms "online/offline" mean?

The emoticon faces in the Yahoo! Messenger and words "online/offline" in a member's profile indicate if a person is online and currently signed into Yahoo! Messenger.

To use this feature, enter a contact's AT&T Yahoo! ID in the appropriate field of the Contact Detail page. If you add a contact with a Yahoo! Mail address, the emoticon face icon is automatically set up.

When the icon next to a contact is yellow (), that person is online and signed in to Yahoo! Messenger. When the icon is gray (), they are not signed in to Messenger.

For more information or to download Yahoo! Messenger, visit Yahoo! Messenger.

You can hide your online status and remove the "Send me a message" link from your profile by following these steps:

  1. Sign out of Yahoo! Messenger, Yahoo! Chat, Yahoo! Games, or Yahoo! Address Book.
  2. Go to Yahoo! Profiles.
  3. Find the box that says "Check the box to hide my online status from other users." If left unchecked, your online status is visible to other users.
  4. Click on the "Finished Editing" button when you're done.
  5. Log back into Yahoo! Messenger or Yahoo! Address Book to see your revised online status.
