How can I protect myself on the Internet?

There are a number of ways to protect yourself online. Here’s just a few of them:

  • choose an online ID (nickname) that doesn't show your real name or might attract the kind of people who you wouldn't want to be your friends.
  • don't tell anyone that you're alone or what time you might be alone.
  • be careful who you share pictures of yourself, your friends or your family with.
  • don’t mention private or personal information in your blog, profile, or any other public online space including chat rooms and message boards. For example, your surname, address, telephone number, school, place of work and so on.

What should I do if someone sends me an abusive email or message?

You shouldn't respond to the message. If you do, it may encourage whoever's hassling you to send more messages or comments. The best thing is to ignore them. If the person continues to be a problem, please refer to Yahoo! Abuse Help.

What should I do if I see something I don’t like on Yahoo!?

If you see anything online which you think might be inappropriate you can check our Terms Of Service for information on acceptable use of our network and report the issue to our Customer Care team who will follow it up.

What types of online behaviour should I be concerned about?

Be wary of any online behaviour that upsets you or makes you feel uncomfortable. For example, someone may start bullying you or pressuring you to meet up, asking personal or sexual questions or asking you to do things you don't want to do. In extreme cases, that person may be breaking the law. If an adult asks you to meet up offline, please speak to a responsible adult about it - or you can report it in confidence using the links below.
