POP Yahoo! Mail with Microsoft Outlook 98 and 2000

If you want to "POP" your Yahoo! Mail into your Outlook 98 or 2000 application, here's how:

  1. From the Tools menu, select "Accounts." If you do not see "Accounts," place your cursor over the two arrows at the bottom of the list to display more choices.
  2. Click the "Add" button.
  3. From the Add menu, click "Mail."
  4. In the Display Name box, type your name as you'd like it to appear when you send a message. Then click "Next."
  5. In the Email Address box, enter your Yahoo! Mail address (for example, "user@yahoo.co.uk") and click "Next."
  6. In the box labelled "My incoming mail server is a…" select "POP3" server.
  7. Type "pop.mail.yahoo.co.uk" in the Incoming Mail (POP3 or IMAP) Server box.
  8. Type "smtp.mail.yahoo.co.uk" in the Outgoing Mail (SMTP) Server box.
  9. Click "Next."
  10. In the Account Name box, enter your Yahoo! Mail ID (your email address without the "@yahoo.com").
  11. In the Password box, enter your Yahoo! Mail password.
  12. Check "Remember Password" if you don't want Outlook to prompt you for your password each time you check your mail. Handy!
  13. Do not check the box labelled "Log on using Secure Password Authentication (SPA)."
  14. Click "Next."
  15. Choose your connection type under the "Which Method Do You Use to Connect to the Internet" heading.
  16. If you chose "Connect using my phone line," you must select a dial-up connection in the Dial-up Connection Wizard and click "Next."
  17. Click "Finish."

Important: The Yahoo! Mail SMTP server now requires authentication. To turn this setting on, follow these steps:

  1. From the Tools menu, choose "Accounts."
  2. Select the "Mail" tab.
  3. Select your Yahoo! Mail account and click "Properties."
  4. Click the "Servers" tab.
  5. Check the box next to "My Server Requires Authentication."
  6. Make sure that "Log on using Secure Password Authentication" is not checked.
  7. Click "OK."

Do you want to delete messages from the Yahoo! Mail server after you view them, or would you rather leave them there? Here's how to make your choice:

  1. From the Tools menu, select "Accounts."
  2. Click the "Mail" tab.
  3. Select your Yahoo! Mail account and click "Properties."
  4. Click the "Advanced" tab.
  5. If you'd like to keep a copy of your email messages on the Yahoo! Mail server, check the box next to "Leave a copy of messages on the server." If you want to delete your messages from the Yahoo! Mail server after viewing them in Outlook, don't check the box.
  6. Click "OK."
  7. Close Microsoft Outlook and reboot.

If you're unable to send email, try using port 587 when sending via Yahoo!'s SMTP server. Here's how to make this change:

  1. From the "Tools" menu, select "Accounts."
  2. Select your Yahoo! POP account and click the "Properties" button.
  3. Click the "Advanced" tab.
  4. Next to "Outgoing server (SMTP)," change port 25 to 587.
  5. Click "Apply." Then click "OK" and "Close."
