Configure Outlook Express to send/receive email

Your account name may need to be corrected.

Please follow these steps:

  1. Open Outlook Express
  2. Click on Tools option on the menubar and select 'Accounts' from the list
  3. Click on the 'Mail' tab to show a list of the mail accounts configured
  4. Select an account and then click on 'Properties' button
  5. Click on the 'Servers' tab

Look under Incoming Mail Server. If the account name contains "hg" followed by one or two numbers and a full stop after the "@" symbol (e.g. "hg6." or "hg24.", perhaps), then the "hg" part will need to be removed.

For example,

"username@hg24.btinternet.com" (or "username@hg24.btopenworld.com")

should become

"username@btinternet.com" (or "username@btopenworld.com")

Make the change if necessary, then click on OK.

Before changing the account name:

After changing the account name:

Your username for signing into BT Yahoo! services is your email address, and does not need the "hg" part. For technical reasons, your upgraded Mail service rejects the account name if it contains the "hg" part.

Please note that if you are connecting to the internet using the Windows Dial-Up Networking (i.e. you are not using the BT Yahoo! Browser and the welcome screen), the Dial-Up Networking connection containing the "hg" part should not be altered.
