Yahoo! Search

What is the MSIE Search Pane?

Overview
The Yahoo! Search pane, accessible through Internet Explorer, makes it easy to use Yahoo! Web Search and Yahoo! Image Search no matter where you are on the Web. Your search results appear within the pane, rather than in your main window.

To start using the Yahoo! Search pane, click the "Search" button in your browser toolbar. This opens a pane on the left side.

If Yahoo! is not already set as your pane, just do the following:

  1. Click "Customize."
  2. Click the button labeled "Use one search service."
  3. Choose "Yahoo!" from the list and click "OK."

The Yahoo! Search pane appears in your Internet Explorer browser.

Clicking the "New" button at the top of the pane takes you back to start a new search at any time.

Searching the Web
When you use the pane for the first time, you'll be on the Web tab. The search box works just like regular Yahoo! Search. However, your search results show up in the search pane without changing what you see in the main browser window.

Your results include:

  • Sponsor Results: These are relevant results paid for by businesses and organisations, the same links you would see using regular Yahoo! Search.
  • Best 20 Results: You'll see any relevant Yahoo! Directory categories first, then a list of matching web sites and pages.

Clicking any result opens that site in the main browser window. Your search results remain visible in the pane. At the bottom of the pane, is a link to the "Next 20" results. Clicking this link opens a new page of results in the pane.

Searching Images
To find photos and graphics on the Web, click the "Images" tab in the search pane. Type what you're looking for into the search box, and click "Search."

The first five image results appear in the pane. When you click any of these thumbnails, more info about that image appears in the pane. The site this image is originally from opens in the main browser window.

Note: In Internet Explorer help documents, this feature is also called the "Search Companion." However, it is not related to the Yahoo! Companion toolbar.
