What are the different sections on the Search results page?

The Yahoo! Search results page offers a variety of features to help you find what you are searching for. The page is divided into four main sections: The Search Box, The Left Navigation Area, Web Results, and Sponsor Results.

The Search Box:

  • Start a search by typing questions or phrases into the search box. Then click the Search button or press the Enter key on your keyboard.
  • To change the type of search you are performing, click one of the search category links above the search box. Selecting one of the search category links gives Yahoo! Search instructions about what kind of search results you would like to see. This will enable you to find more specific results.
  • To configure your Yahoo! Search preferences, click the Options button to the right of the search box, and then select Preferences from the drop down menu.
  • To perform an Advanced Search, click the Options button to the right of the search box, and then select Advanced Search from the drop down menu. Advanced Web Search helps you to find sites that match very specific criteria. You can use it to limit your search to certain phrases, a specific language, or to find sites that link to a specific URL. Unlike Yahoo! Search preferences, which can be saved, the Advanced Search options you choose apply only to your current search. To learn more about using the Advanced Search feature, please visit the Advanced Search Help Page.

The Left Navigation Area:

  • At the top of the left navigation area, you will see Search Pad. Search Pad is a very useful tool that allows you to take notes and keep track of the sites you visit while using Yahoo! Search. To learn more about Search Pad please visit the Search Pad Help Pages.
  • Beneath Search Pad, you will see SearchScan. SearchScan protects your computer by alerting you to websites that are potentially harmful. Click the SearchScan button to set the level of protection you wish to use. To learn more about SearchScan, please visit the Security Help Pages.
  • Below SearchScan, you will see a list of up to ten high-quality sites. These sites are selected based upon their high level of relevancy to your search question or phrase. The sites listed in the left navigation are usually supplemented with premium content and information in the form of enhanced results modules. To learn more about enhanced results, please visit the Enhanced Results Help Pages.

Web Results:

  • Web Results are the most relevant web pages found by Yahoo! Search in response to your search terms.
  • Web Results are generated from the billions of web pages discovered, crawled, and indexed by Yahoo! Search.

Sponsor Results:

  • Are advertisements for websites which pay for placement in search results based on keywords that are relevant to their business.
  • These listings appear on Yahoo! Search results pages and on other select Yahoo! pages.
  • You will see Sponsor Results when they're relevant to the specific search terms you used. For example, if you search for digital cameras you might see Sponsor Results for websites that sell digital cameras.
  • The Yahoo! Search results page separates Sponsor Results from standard web results so that you can tell them apart. To learn more about Sponsor Results, please visit the Sponsor Results Help Pages.
