The Insert Keyword feature can allow you to save time and help increase the relevancy and click-through rate of your ads using the keyword token to dynamically insert the keyword that matched the user’s search query, into your ad’s title and/or description when it is displayed.
You can use the Insert Keyword feature when creating a new ad or editing an existing ad.
To use the “Insert Keyword” feature:
- Click the "Campaigns" tab.
- Choose a campaign.
- Choose an ad group.
- Once you are on the Ad Group Details page, you will need to:
- Click “Create New Ad” if you are creating a new ad, or
- Choose the “Ads” tab, click the desired ad name to edit the existing ad, and insert the keyword token in the title and/or description fields.
- You will go to the “Ad Details” page where you will be prompted to provide a:
- Title
- Short Description
- Destination URL
- Display URL and

- You can use the “Insert Keyword” feature for your title and description. To access the “Insert Keyword” feature, begin typing your title or description.
- You will see the “Insert Keyword” link appear below the right side of the text field.
- At the point in the title or description where you want a keyword inserted, click the “Insert Keyword” link below the text field. In the Keyword Insertion dialog box, enter the default text.
- Click the “Add Keyword Placeholder” button.
- In the case where substituting the keyword will cause your title or descriptions to exceed the maximum permitted length for the fiield, you must overwrite the “DEFAULT_TEXT” with the text that should be displayed.
For example, you would replace “Looking for {KEYWORD:DEFAULT_TEXT}” with “Large selection of {KEYWORD:lunch buffet}.” This means that the text “lunch buffet” will appear whenever the keyword causes your title or descriptions to exceed the maximum permitted length for the field.
- Click "Save"
- You can specify alternate text for a keyword on the Keyword Details page. To create alternate text for a keyword:
- In the Ad Group Details page, click the “Keywords” tab.
- Identify the keyword and click its link.
- Click the “Edit” link next to Alternate Text near the top of the page.
- Enter the alternate text.
- Click “Submit”.
Note: Alternate text may also be used in place of the keyword.
