• Step 1. Enter your friend's exact Yahoo! ID or alias name. Your friend must have a Yahoo! ID in order for you to add them to your list.

  Important: If your friend does not have Yahoo! ID or Yahoo! Messenger yet, make sure to send them an invitation and download instructions. Click here to invite a friend and send instructions.

• Step 2: Select the group to which you want the friend to be added. If you want to create a new group, just type the name in the space provided. Groups help you keep track of friends (e.g, work friends, chat friends, etc.) separately. Note: Group names cannot contain spaces or special characters.

• Step 3: Choose whether you want to use your main Yahoo! ID or one of your aliases (profiles) to add your friend. Your friend will only see the ID or alias that you choose, and not any of the others that you might have. To create additional aliases (profiles) for your account, click here. Remember that you may need to close the Add dialog box and reopen it to see your new Yahoo! aliases.

• Step 4: Send your friend a message to appear along with the notice that you've added them.

Note: When you add a friend to your list, the friend is automatically notified and given the option to add you in return. If the friend adds you in return, you are notified.
