Why am I unable to connect to the FTP server?

If you are unable to successfully connect to your account using FTP, please review the suggestions below:

  1. Make sure that you are entering the following information correctly:

    Address: ftp.ca.geocities.com
    User Name: your username
    Password: your password

Please be sure that all of the information you type in the fields are in lowercase and contain no spaces.

Note: If your FTP program is asking for a remote folder or directory path, you may enter /membername. Replace membername with your Yahoo! Canada GeoCities login ID.

  2. If your member name and/or password has changed, you will need to update the information in your FTP client. If you are using a web page creation program to upload or automatically update your site you will also need to re-configure the connection to our FTP server.

To request for a new password, please click here.

  3. If you haven't re-registered since the Yahoo! Canada GeoCities merger, this may be the reason you cannot access your account. Click here to begin the re-registration process.

  4. FTP normally tries to open a connection back to the client for transferring data. Internet Service Providers (ISP) often prohibit these connections. If you experience problems connecting to your account using FTP and are certain you are using the correct login information, you may want to check with your ISP for any limitations they may have imposed.

FTP has another mode, "passive", where all connection requests are initiated by the client. If your FTP client code supports passive mode, try it. In WS_FTP, the option is located in the Advanced tab under Session Properties, before you connect to your site. You should be able to use FTP in passive mode.
