I'm seeing "External Protocol Request" windows when I try to send a message using Rogers Yahoo! Messenger

Rogers Yahoo! Toolbar for Mozilla Firefox has several ways to send messages using Rogers Yahoo! Messenger. The most common way is to click the right button on your mouse and select "IM this" from the "Yahoo!" menu that is built into version 1.1 of the toolbar. You must have Rogers Yahoo! Messenger, or another program that understands the "ymsgr" protocol installed in order to use these features.

Rogers Yahoo! Messenger uses a special protocol for requests to send an instant message. Rogers Yahoo! Messenger uses "ymsgr:" in the same way that web pages use "http:" for requests. If you haven't told your browser to use Rogers Yahoo! Messenger whenever it sees a request that begins with "ymsgr," your browser will ask you what to do. In Mozilla Firefox, it opens a dialogue that looks something like this, without the red ovals:

To use the IM features built into Rogers Yahoo! Toolbar, please do the following:

  1. Make sure this dialogue is in response to your clicking a button or menu item that is intended to send an instant message. If it isn't, click "Cancel".
  2. Check that the dialogue is asking about the "ymsgr" protocol and "Yahoo! Messenger" as the application (see the marked areas in the image above).
  3. Check the box that tells Mozilla Firefox to remember your choice.
  4. Click "Launch".

You should only have to do the above steps the first time you use a Rogers Yahoo! Toolbar feature that uses Rogers Yahoo! Messenger.
