What is a firewall?

A firewall restricts the information flowing between the Internet and your computer. By allowing only legitimate applications to access the Internet, a firewall helps keep hackers or other unwanted intrusions from gaining access to your computer or your files.

Most personal firewalls are software applications that you install on each computer.
