What do these error messages mean?

Here are a few common web error codes:

400 Bad Request
The server does not recognize the URL. Make sure you typed it correctly.

401 Unauthorised User
You entered an incorrect ID or password to access a protected web site.

403 Forbidden Pages
You are not being allowed access to a protected web site. If you have registered with a site that requires a password and still get this message, make sure you have correctly typed the password.

404 Not Found
Either the page you are searching for has been deleted or its name or location has been changed on the web server. You can try deleting portions of the URL, starting at the end, and see if you can find a current link to the page you want to view.

415 Unsupported Media Type
The web server will not accept the request because the media type is not supported.

500 Internal Error
The web server was unable to display the page due to an internal (server software) error.

501 Not implemented
The web server does not support the feature you requested. This is not a common error but typically occurs when new features or forms are implemented.

502 Service Temporarily Overloaded
Network connection refused by the server
Too many connections
Too many people are trying to access the same site you are. Try clicking the "Reload/Refresh" button; if that does not help, try accessing the site again later.

503 Service Unavailable
The web page exists but is not accessible at the moment. Clicking the "Reload/Refresh" button a few times may solve the problem. If not, try again later.

678 Timeout connecting to server (WindowsXP)
Verify that your cabling and modem are in sync.

691 Access was denied because the user name and/or password was invalid on the domain (WindowsXP)
Verify that your user name and password are correct in the PPPoE setup. In many cases, the ID or password is mistyped. Retype your ID and password. Be sure not to confuse a lowercase L with a capital I or a zero with a capital O.

718 The connection timed out, waiting for a valid response from the remote computer (WindowsXP)
Verify that your cabling and modem are in sync.

734 The PPP link control protocol was terminated (WindowsXP)
A cable is unplugged while you are connected to the Internet. Reconnect the cable and restart your computer, if necessary.

769 The specified destination is not reachable (WindowsXP)
Your network card is not set up correctly. Reinstall the drivers.

Retype
In many cases, the user name and password is mistyped. Retype your ID and password. Be sure not to confuse a lowercase L with a capital I or a zero with a capital O.

Failed DNS Lookup
Either the server you are trying to reach is down or too busy, or you have incorrectly typed the URL. Check the URL or try retyping the URL with a "www." in front of it, if you left that out.

NNTP server error
The USENET newsgroup's host server is down, or you may have incorrectly typed the URL. Try again.

Helper application not found
Viewer not found
You clicked or selected a file that requires a particular application, such as a video or sound file, but you do not have the necessary application to view or listen to it.
