Why is Windows Security Center advising me that my computer might be at risk?

Windows XP Service Pack 2 includes a new feature called Windows Security Center. The Security Center acts as a central location for viewing the security status of your computer and changing security settings. Three of the most important security measures that can protect your computer are:

  1. Firewall Software
  2. Firewall software helps block potential outside intrusion and also blocks programs from accessing the Internet without your permission. Windows XP has built-in firewall software that is activated by default if Service Pack 2 is already installed. If Security Center detects that firewall software is turned off, you will receive an alert telling you that your computer might be at risk.

  3. Automatic Windows Update
  4. Windows XP has the ability to automatically download and install the latest security updates for you. If Security Center detects that automatic updates is turned off (or any other non-recommended setting), you will receive an alert telling you that your computer might be at risk.

  5. Virus Protection
  6. It is always advisable to have antivirus software installed on your computer. This can help prevent your computer from being infected by viruses that are not transmitted via email. The Security Center will check to see if you have antivirus software installed on your computer and whether your antivirus software is up to date. If Security Center detects that you don't have updated antivirus protection, you will receive an alert telling you that your computer might be at risk.

If any of the security components listed above are not turned on or available, Windows XP will display a blue or red shield icon in the system tray (the area at the lower right of your Windows XP desktop below the time of day). Additionally, you will receive pop-up security alerts if any of these security conditions are not met when you start your computer or log on.

Clicking the shield icon or on the pop-up alert will open Windows Security Center and provide you with information on the security issue(s) as well as advice on how to resolve it.

If you already have firewall software installed on your computer or have antivirus software that is not recognized by Windows Security Center, you can change the setting to stop receiving alerts. Visit the Microsoft Website to learn how to change security settings in Windows Security Center.
