The hearts that appear next to each profile in the basic search results view show you how much each match meets the criteria you're interested in. The more hearts you see, the better the profile fits with the search criteria you've selected.

By default, profiles are sorted by overall fit. In other words, profiles that have more hearts appear at the top of the list and profiles that are not as good a fit (fewer hearts) appear lower in the list.
