How to turn on JavaScript in your browser
Description
Most websites use JavaScript for some enhanced features. If your browser doesn't have JavaScript turned on (or "enabled"), these websites won't display correctly or some of their features won't work properly. This article explains how to enable JavaScript in the browsers supported by Yahoo!.
Resolution
JavaScript is a simple programming language that's essential to many websites. Without JavaScript turned on (or "enabled"), many of the Yahoo! sites you visit may not perform as designed. For the best experience on Yahoo!, make sure that you have JavaScript enabled. To enable JavaScript, follow the instructions below for your browser.

* Internet Explorer (IE) 6.0:
Operating systems:
- Microsoft Windows 2000 and XP
- Select Tools | Internet Options.
- Select the Security tab.
- Click Internet to select the Internet Zone.
- Click Custom Level.
- Scroll down the list until you see the section labeled "Scripting."
- Under "Active Scripting," select Enable.
- Click the OK button at the bottom of the "Internet Options" window.
- Close and restart your browser.
* IE 7.0 and 8.0:
Operating systems:
- IE 7: Windows XP
- IE 8: Windows XP, Vista, and 7
- Select Tools | Internet Options.
- Select the Security tab.
- Click Internet to select the Internet Zone.
- Click Custom Level.
- Scroll down the list until you see the section labeled "Scripting."
- Select Enable for Active Scripting and scroll down the list and select Scripting of Java Applets.
- Click OK and click Yes to confirm, if prompted.
- Click the OK button at the bottom of the "Internet Options" window.
- Close and restart your browser.
* IE 9.0:
Operating systems:
- Windows Vista and 7
- Select Tools (gear icon) | Manage Add-ons.
- Ensure the menu at the top displays Show: Currently loaded add-ons.
- Select J2SE Runtime Environment or Java within the main pane, and at the bottom-right of the "Manage Add-ons window."
- Click Enable, click Close.
- Close and restart your browser.
Note: If you can't locate J2SE Runtime Environment or Java within the main pane, please reinstall Java, and then try the above troubleshooting steps again.
* Mozilla Firefox 3.5 and newer:
Operating systems:
- PC Firefox 3.5: Windows 2000, XP, and Vista
- Mac Firefox 3.5: Mac OS X 10.4, 10.5, and 10.6
- PC Firefox 4.0 and newer: Windows 2000, XP, Vista, and 7
- Mac Firefox 4.0 and newer: Mac OS X 10.5, 10.6, and 10.7
- Choose the menu option for your computer:
- PC: Select Tools | Options.
- Mac: Select Firefox | Options. - Click Content.
- Check Enable JavaScript.
- Click OK.
- Close and restart your browser.
* Apple Safari 3.5 and newer:
Operating systems:
- PC Safari 3.5: Windows XP and Vista
- Mac Safari 3.5: Mac OS X 10.4.9 or newer
- PC Safari 4 and 5: Windows XP, Vista, or 7
- Mac Safari 4: Mac OS X 10.4, 10.5, and 10.6
- Mac Safari 5: Mac OS X 10.6 and 10.7
- Choose the menu option for your computer:
- Mac: Select Safari (gear icon) | Preferences.
- PC: Select Tools (gear icon) | Preferences.
- Click Security.
- Check Enable Plug-Ins, Enable Java, and Enable JavaScript.
- Depending on your version: Click OK or close the "Security Settings" pane.
- Close and restart your browser.
Operating systems:
- Windows XP, Vista, and 7
- Mac OS X 10.5, 10.6, and 10.7
- Choose the menu option for your computer:
- PC: Select Tools (wrench icon) | Options.
- Mac OS X: Select Tools (wrench icon) | Preferences.
- Mac Chromebook: Select Tools (wrench icon) | Settings.
- Select Under the Hood.
- The "Options - Under the Hood" tab displays. - In "Privacy," click Content settings.
- The "Options - Content Settings" tab displays. - Under "JavaScript," select Allow all sites to run JavaScript (recommended).
- When you are done, close the "Options - Content Settings" tab by clicking the X that displays on the tab.
- Close and restart your browser.
