Using the Settings menu in Yahoo! Toolbar

Description

Learn how to find the "Settings" menu in each version of Yahoo! Toolbar as well as each version's available options.


Resolution

Choose your version of Yahoo! Toolbar below. If you are unsure of your version, please refer to our version guide:

Version 8 for Internet Explorer and Version 2 for Firefox:

To access the "Settings" page, click the gear icon from your Yahoo! Toolbar, then select Toolbar Preferences.

Basic Preferences:

  • Show Add Apps buttons -- Turns display of button on and off.
  • Show text labels for each app -- Turns display of text labels for apps on and off.
  • Enable Feature Tips -- Controls whether Yahoo! alerts you about helpful Yahoo! Toolbar features.
  • Enable the 404 Assistant -- Controls whether Yahoo! assists you with 404 page errors.

Privacy and Security:

  • Help Yahoo! improve its products and services by sending information about the sites you visit -- Controls whether you share your browsing history with Yahoo!, to help us develop better products for our users.

Save Layout Preferences:

  • Save my Yahoo! Toolbar layout and settings to this computer only -- Saves your Yahoo! Toolbar settings with your computer, not your Yahoo! ID. If you select this setting, when you sign in you will not see your customized buttons.
  • Save my Yahoo! Toolbar layout and settings to my Yahoo! ID -- Saves your Yahoo! Toolbar settings with your Yahoo! ID, not your computer. If you select this setting, when you sign out you will not see your customized buttons.

Toolbar Skin:

  • Choose either a default or custom Yahoo! Toolbar theme.

Search Preferences:

  • Search Asssist -- Choose options for this feature that offers relevant keywords as you type in the search box
  • Always open results in a new tab -- Controls whether to open a new tab for search results

Version 7 for Internet Explorer:

To access the "Settings" page, click the gear icon from your Yahoo! Toolbar, then select Toolbar Preferences.

Search Box:

  • Suggest using Search Assist -- As you type in the search box, Search Assist offers relevant keywords in real-time.
  • Include my recent searches with suggestions -- Search Assist includes your recent searches in its suggestions.
  • Auto-clear recent searches when exiting IE -- Your recent searches are cleared from memory when you close the browser.
  • Include suggestions from my Bookmarks -- Search Assist includes your bookmarks in its suggestions.

Software Updates:

  • Automatically download and install toolbar updates -- Controls whether to automatically update Yahoo! Toolbar when new versions become available.

More Options:

  • Show text on buttons -- Turns display of text labels for buttons on and off.
  • Show an alert on my Mail Button when I have new Yahoo! Mail -- Turns display of new mail alerts on and off.
  • Enable Smart Tools when selecting text -- Controls whether you can use Smart Tools to perform certain online tasks more quickly and easily (e.g., searching the web, sending links through IM or email, translating web pages, etc.)
  • Enable Feature Tips -- Controls whether Yahoo! alerts you about helpful Yahoo! Toolbar features.
  • Help improve Yahoo! by sending info about the sites you visit -- Controls whether you share your browsing history with Yahoo! in order to help us develop better products.
  • Enable Yahoo! Mail Single Instance -- Controls whether Yahoo! Toolbar keeps track of open Yahoo! Mail sessions.
  • Enable the 404 Assistant -- Controls whether Yahoo! assists you with 404 page errors.

Version 6 for Internet Explorer:

To access the "Toolbar Options" page, click the pencil icon from your Yahoo! Toolbar:

Search:

  • Suggest popular searches -- The search box shows popular searches that match what you are typing in the search box.
  • Enable search history -- Your 50 most recent search terms are saved and are shown in the search box if they match.

More Options:

  • Show icons only without names -- Display button icons only without label text.
  • Show Yahoo! menu on the menu bar -- Places a Yahoo! menu on your browser menu bar.
