How to search for a message in Yahoo! Mail

Description

If you can't find an email, or messages seem to be missing, try using the search feature.

Resolution

To search all email folders (except Spam):

  1. Type search terms into the search box at the top of the Mail window. (See our tips for advanced search terms.)
  2. Click Search Mail. The results appear in a new tab in Yahoo! Mail.

    Mail searchbar

    A.   Type your search in the search bar
    B.   Then click the Search Mail button

  3. To narrow your search results, click any options in the Narrow Results By: bar on the left. You can select a specific sender, year, attachment type, folder, or status (read or unread).
    • Note: You can narrow your results using multiple criteria at once. For example, if you click "2012" and "Photo", the results will only include emails from 2012 that have photos attached.

The search feature looks at all parts of the email messages, including all senders, recipients ("To:" and "CC:"), subjects, message bodies, attachment names, and most attachment contents. It also searches chat messages in your Conversation folder, and will displays the search results in the message list area.

Tips for your search terms:

  • Searches are not case-sensitive; searching for "abc" is the same as "ABC."
  • Use parentheses -- "()" -- to insert an implied "OR" between terms. For example, searching for "(jake john)" matches documents with "jake" OR "john."
  • Use a minus sign ("-") to exclude something from your search. For example, searching for "party -birthday" matches documents that contain "party" but not "birthday."
  • Most punctuation characters are stripped, so searching for "joe@yahoo.com" is the same as searching for "joe yahoo com."
  • For more tips, see our instructions for advanced search.
