Troubleshooting POP issues with Outlook 2007

ID: SLN5422
Refers to: Mail , Mail Classic , Mobile Mail

Description

This document provides information on troubleshooting different POP and SMTP issues one may experience in Outlook 2007 such as:

  • Messages do not download
  • Messages won't send from the email client
  • An error is received while sending or downloading messages

Resolution

I. Check the account settings in Outlook 2007

Note: Some ISPs do not permit message routing through another SMTP server while you are connected to their network. To resolve this problem, replace the SMTP server for the other ISP or the other email account by using the SMTP server that is associated with the ISP that you use to connect to the Internet.

  1. Click Tools and then select Account Settings from the drop-down menu.
  2. Select the Email tab, select the Yahoo! Mail account, and press Change
  3. Verify that the following information matches your settings:
    • Email Address: Your full email address (email@domain.com)
    • Account Type: POP3
    • Incoming mail server: pop.mail.yahoo.com
    • Outgoing mail server (SMTP): smtp.mail.yahoo.com
    • User Name: Your Yahoo! ID (your address without the "@yahoo.com" or your full address if you have a ymail.com or rocketmail.com domain)
    • Password: Your Yahoo! account password
  4. Uncheck  Require logon using Secure Password Authentication (SPA).
  5. Click More Settings then select the Outgoing Server tab.
  6. Check both My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication and Use the same settings as my incoming mail server.
  7. Select the Advanced tab.
  8. Set the Incoming server (POP3) field to 995.
  9. Set the Outgoing server (SMTP) field to 465.
  10. Check This server requires an encrypted connection (SSL).
  11. Select SSL from the use the following type of encrypted connection drop-down menu.
  12. Click OK | Next Finish.

If any of the settings were changed, we suggest closing the Outlook client and opening it again before sending or receiving messages.

II. Examine the configuration of your security software

Sometimes, a piece of software security (anti-virus, firewall, or anti-spy) on your PC, a piece of networking equipment (router, bridge, or firewall), or your Internet service provider (ISP) may be blocking access to the Yahoo! Mail POP and/or SMTP servers.

Any failure to connect to the Yahoo! POP or SMTP server would normally indicate a network issue.

Try temporarily disabling any security software (such as anti-virus, firewall, or anti-spy) you have installed, as some software security products will actually block the Yahoo! POP or SMTP server or ports. If you are unfamiliar with how to do this, please consult with the software vendor's online help or contact their support services directly.

If you have any network equipment (such as a router, bridge, or hardware firewall), check to see if it is blocking the Yahoo! POP and SMTP servers or ports. If you are unfamiliar with how to do this, please consult the product documentation or the manufacturer's support services directly.

You may also contact your ISP for assistance. Ask if the modem (if provided by your ISP) or software you are using has a firewall feature. It is also possible that the ISP has certain ports blocked on their end.
